Frommers reporting the 'Trump Slump,' a Devastating Drop in Tourism to the United States

The Travel Press is Reporting the 'Trump Slump,' a Devastating Drop in Tourism to the United States
Experts across the travel industry are warning that masses of tourists are being scared away from visiting the United States, and the loss of tourism jobs could be devastating.

It’s known as the “Trump Slump.” And I know of no reputable travel publication to deny it.

Thus, the prestigious Travel Weekly magazine (as close to an “official” travel publication as they come) has set the decline in foreign tourism at 6.8%. And the fall-off is not limited to Muslim travelers, but also extends to all incoming foreign tourists. Apparently, an attack on one group of tourists is regarded as an assault on all.

As far as travel by distinct religious groups, flight passengers from the seven Muslim-majority nations named by Trump were down by 80% in the last week of January and first week of February, according to Forward Keys, a well-known firm of travel statisticians. On the web, flight searches for trips heading to the U.S. out of all international locations was recently down by 17%.

A drop of that magnitude, if continued, would reduce the value of foreign travel within the U.S. by billions of dollars. And the number of jobs supported by foreign tourists and their expenditures in the United States—and thus lost—would easily exceed hundreds of thousands of workers in hotels, restaurants, transportation, stores, tour operations, travel agencies, and the like.

any job you get that is retail or working in the hospitality industry IS a tourism job. The shops in my area are there for tourism, a few are there for the residents though most residents can't afford to shop in most of those places or dine out.

What will interesting is that even last year the small businesses couldn't find enough J1 student VISA workers to run their businesses at minimum wage jobs so they were struggling, now it will be worse. And the National Parks in my area can't hire the staff to even open them. So I wonder what's going to happen when there aren't enough staff to open Yellowstone and Glacier. Glacier has jobs posted but nobody goes back for a second season because it sucks to work there. If YNP doesn't open, it will mean thousands of jobs in the region, inside and outside the parks.

"... I protested him and voted against him each election. I am also against the Iraq war and protested that too"
That worked well. I usually got a very good reception after that.

I just came back from an overseas trip and my new introduction was:

"I am an American, and I voted for Hillary. I am against Trump. Hillary got more votes and even many of the people who did vote for Trump now regret it."

That also got me a very good reception.

welcoming and hospitable to American tourists. At most you may encounter a mild curiosity as to 'why we elected a Moron as President?'. Go ahead and make your plans and have a great time!

But considering the uncertainty of so many things - including whether any of the museums would be open or if their operating budgets would be slashed, I ended up canceling all of it.

During the GWB-era it was tricky, because he was popular at home but reviled abroad. Now it's easier because Trump is reviled everywhere.

Everywhere we went in England, Scotland and Ireland, people expressed their shock in the fact that DT was even running for President. They all had disparaging things to say about him. It was embarrassing that they knew more about the election than the Americans did. I was in France when Bush was elected the second and people kept asking what is wrong with you Americans?
