A plea to Republican voters

Last edited Sat Feb 25, 2017, 01:31 PM - Edit history (1)

I am asking you with respect, to try, for just a moment, to put on hold all of the political concepts you’ve held over the years. I am pleading with you to get in contact with your own common sense and use it to see what’s happening to our country. And I am asking you to please try to grasp your own sense of objective reality.

And yes, I’m talking to anyone and everyone who believes that Donald Trump is promising you a “better life.” Are his actions matching his words? Is he doing anything at all to bring about the life that you yourself are hoping for? Is he appealing to your aspirations rather than your basest instincts? (And make no mistake about it. Base instincts, in one form or another, exist in all of us.) What kind of human being would speak to the worst in us rather than to our sense of decency?

But let me get to the point. Donald Trump is a danger to you, me, and perhaps all of humanity. The false beliefs you’ve been taught your whole lives about so-called “bleeding heart, northeastern liberal establishment, ivory tower, liberal, faggot, Jews, blacks, brown people, and foreign THEMS” are nothing more than lies, propaganda and stereotype cartoons that have been fed to you in order to condition you to hate “The Other.”

So let me try to tell you about the reality that awaits those you hate, and that also awaits you. The hatred being voiced by Trump and those with whom he has surrounded himself, will elevate. He’s already approved of more privatized prisons which are nothing more than, unsupervised, unanswerable torture chambers. How long do you suppose it will be before they become, what at one time, were called “camps?” And how much longer after that, will these so-called “camps” become places of death? We’ve seen this progression before. And we may just be seeing it again.

And so, dear Republicans, is this really the world you want? Is this what you’re voting for? Is this the world you believe in and hope for?

(Dear DUers: This is an attempt to try to reach Republicans who lurk and troll DU. Most of you may think I'm wasting my time by trying to appeal to their humanity. And to those of you who are referred to here as "lurkers" and "trolls" I believe that, although we may disagree on politics, many of you do retain a sense of human decency. All I am asking of you in this post is to examine the validity of your own beliefs and your own humanity.)

You can say all you want to these folks and they'll only find some reason to spit ugliness at you. I've tried, lord knows I've tried, and the only thing I've gotten in return most of the time is some sloppy silly nonsense twisting you into the bad guy for being concerned about the potential removal of your civil rights.

A good person, a kind person, a empathetic person would try to place some sort of balm on your fears and assure you that they will stand with you if those things even appear to be coming to pass. The people you are trying to appeal to are deaf to our concerns for the future and unfeeling in their response to our current reality.

If you go on how their political representatives have responded to the ground swell against repealing the ACA you already have the answer to your, mine(I know), and everybody else grounded in reality's plea.

They will be ready for you to talk to them in a year. I don't see anything right for anyone happening with Trump in office.

But I guess I just had to give it a try.

It's really difficult to believe that so many humans are devoid of conscience.

Then again, perhaps I'm totally wrong about those Republicans who troll and lurk on DU. I really don't know.

But I do know that I'm disappointed that none of them have responded. I'd like to think they just didn't happen to catch this post. Or perhaps the wost case is that some of them did catch it and thought, "fuck that shit." Then again, perhaps I'm also wrong in this assumption.

Christ, it seems that my optimistic beliefs, and my waffling about their beliefs, are endless.

On the other hand, perhaps they really are some of the most inhumane, mean-spirited pricks that most believe them to be. I hope I'm wrong, all evidence to the contrary.
