He wants them to think he's so essential to the dinner that they can't have it unless he comes, but he needs to understand that the WHCD isn't about him. Its purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for journalism students and to celebrate the First Amendment. It needs to go on and be more successful than ever.

OTOH, Trump may end up being the first president not to attend the WHCA at all since it began in 1921...
