On the heels of President Donald Trumps declaration that the United States must start winning wars again, CNNs Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr revealed military leaders have a different opinion.
There are a lot of questions about what the president means, Starr told Wolf Blitzer. He said he was taking this from watching the military during his days back in high school and college in his words when perhaps it was a much more clear time for military victories.
Trump was in high school in the early 1960s, following World War II and the Korean War. After Trump turned 18, he was eligible to fight in the Vietnam War but received four draft deferments for bone spurs and one deferment for an unknown reason.
Starr said that those wars had major tank battles and major air battles that delivered overwhelming firepower.
That is not the way the world exists today, Starr explained about the modern military. The fight against ISIS, the fight against Al Qaeda is a fight against a spreading ideology that, indeed, has spread across many countries. The president has this new plan sitting on his desk today about options for defeating ISIS, and it includes diplomacy at the very time he is cutting the State Department. It includes financial options. It does include some military options, but youre not going to bomb ISIS out of existence. I dont know a single U.S. military commander that thinks thats feasible.

(24,402 posts)Does he mean that we didn't want to win wars before? When did we *ever* get into wars to lose? The REAL problem IMHO is that- with an exception or two- we keep getting ourselves wars that we shouldn't have been involved in in the first place and/or wars that were pretty muddy and unwinnable to begin with.

Is it too late to find some North Vietnamese soldier in the woods somewhere who doesn't know the war is over and send Trump to meet him in a period-appropriate uniform?
It would have to be a REALLY BIG uniform, but . . . it's worth a shot, right?

(1,606 posts)imagining WW2 war movies that glorified how awesome America is - he's really not that fucking smart, after all.
What did he mean... no need to ponder, as we're dealing with a pretty low IQ here.
Perhaps his peabrained thought trail was this:
"We need to start winning wars! Like America, was great! We totally got rid of Hitler! Like that, we need to have a tremendous, great war!"
(Gag, he is just so fucking stupid.)

(2,560 posts)Given his television watching habits, he probably meant "Combat" starring Vic Morrow. Great series.

(146,284 posts)is nuts, frankly. Wars suck. They always have and always will. Only people who have nothing to risk want wars.
Trump sucks!

(23,937 posts)it will start with a major terrorist attack on some big blue west coast city, of course, probably within the next 3 months so Trump can credibly blame Obama for intelligence failures
then we will avenge the thousands of dead through a blitzkrieg-style invasion of an acceptable target country (significantly weaker, but not an obvious pushover; Pakistan or North Korea would work) -- regional escalation and destabilization will be unspoken goals to promote further military actions "to keep the American people SAFE"
and then, once our erratic ruthlessness and brutality have been thoroughly re-established, it's time to have another little chat with Mexico about paying for the wall

(20,828 posts)America has trouble winning the peace because dumb * like Trump put all our resources into military build ups instead of domestic programs and diplomacy. Militarily we seem to be able to kill people in droves right up there with anyone in history.

(82,849 posts)While at the same time, he's bad-mouthing the military. I remember when even the slightest hint of a politician criticizing the men and women in uniform would get him pilloried in the public square. Yet here's Trump, who has previously denounced VA patients as malingerers, saying the military doesn't fight to win.
His supporters clearly don't see anything wrong with that, and Republican office holders have been entirely co-opted because they don't dare breathe a word against Trump.

This is a nightmare. Someone stop this man. As much as I fear a Pence presidency, I don't think he'd race to war for the thrill of it.

(9,350 posts)I think Trump's views come less from watching the military while he was in high school and college and more from being a guy who avoided going to war. He seems like a guy who thinks war is fun and easy because he sat on the sidelines while other men and women went to war and suffered the tragedies of war. Trump would likely have a different view of the military and war if he had actually spent time in the military.
