You know, President Trump finally delivered a speech befitting his unexpected office. Sure, he made grand promises he may never be able to keep and offered a vision of America that is radically different than the reality. But his one-hour address to a joint session of Congress was devoid of the press bashing, bombast, braggadocio and overt bias that were the hallmarks of his presidential campaign, his transition and the first few weeks of his term. There was even a rather soaring finish.
But we have been here before. The president will soon do, say or tweet something that negates the policies he talked about. And dont be fooled by the seemingly calm tone set by Trump. The chaos that has enveloped the White House was most evident in one passage.
Even though his new and second national security adviser H.R. McMaster said the term radical Islamic terrorism wasnt helpful, Trump hammered it home. Our obligation is to serve, protect and defend the citizens of the United States, he said. We are also taking strong measures to protect our nation from radical Islamic terrorism.
Again, what Trump actually does in policy is much more important than this one speech. How much he will actually be able to accomplish remains to be seen. Repeal of Obamacare? Even the president said the other day, Nobody knew health care could be so complicated.
So, Ill give Trump his due right now. But any minute now, he will jump back into the chaos. He cant help it. He created it.
