They are deliberately missing the point. It's not the contact that is the problem, it's the lie. Had he been honest about the meetings, he could have explained the circumstances and the matter would more than likely been settled

He didn’t do that, which was really stupid considering the reports from the Intel agencies about Russian interference. He should have expected that the truth would come out.

Russian contacts throughout the Trumpy White House. Any suggestion that there was Russian collusion had to be downplayed or simply denied. Sessions was following the game plan.

They got away with "Clinton did it" or "Clinton was worse" during the campaign, but they appear to know their Russian collusion looks really bad, and they have little to fight back with.
Russia and Wikileaks are no longer aiding them, so they are left with the Drudges and O'Keefes. Sad.
