their character.

If I got ripped off, I'd be annoyed, too. I'd be sad and frustrated if I didn't get my money back, certainly. But I'd consider it a DUTY to warn others, so they didn't get ripped off, too--I'd swallow my embarrassment and humiliation at being a moron who got conned, and sound the alarm--"Don't buy the LUSTROUS PEARL, friends! It's actually a pebble covered in bird shit! You'll be sorry! One star on YELP!"

But those Trumphumpers, they sure have a different way of looking at things. They're saying to themselves "I bought this piece of shit, and I won't be satisfied until everyone else buys it, too--misery loves company, after all!" And then they're saying to their good friends and relatives, with all the faux sincerity they can muster, "So buy that Lustrous Pearl--OR ELSE...and we'll Make America Great Again!!! GRRRRR!"

And the worse Trump gets, the louder and more stupid his supporters get, even as their actual numbers shrink.

I have several Trump-humpers in my world and that is EXACTLY how they have been acting. It's almost like, "the kool-aid isn't that bad, you should give it a chance. We did and we're glad!"

Uh....NOPE.

What I really loved about your post is its use of metaphor and storytelling to get the point across. Alas, I was born a technical/logical writer and I struggle with finding a natural voice, so I really am fascinated by those who can tell the story in another way. I'll be looking at this and figuring out how to tell the story in my own world. And I hope more than anything that I can be successful at it.

who don't understand the animosity between political groups that has developed since the start of hate radio (it is hate radio, so that is what I will call it) in the early 1990s.

Some people did not see the beginnings of what the rest of us are watching come to fruition.

It's sort of random, and the powers that be count on it. They don't want today's younger - or today's less political - people to know this nastiness has been going on for a long, long time.

I can't remember the last time someone from the loyal opposition talked to me respectfully. And trust me, I would; I remember when we fought honestly, but in some sort of fairness and respect. I miss that.

But to fellow DUers who might be unaware: once upon a time, we did debate one another respectfully. We made compromises. We got shit done. We did amazing things in this America that I love.

Today? Not so much. And I worry for our future if we can't get back there.

I have some rwnj in my family & they are very careful not to say that they hate blacks, Hispanics, gays or women, but they have no issue saying that they hate liberals & democrats. It's code for all the groups that you can't name.

In the worst of them, I've noticed a gleefulness that liberals are fearful & concerned. It's one of the difference between us - when they were angst ridden over Obama, I didn't understand it, but I never felt gleeful that they were worried. They are having so much fun posting their liberal tears comments & calling us snowflakes. They are Trump at the core - bullies who don't know how to adapt to changing times.

Then the kid starts screaming hysterically, and the dog starts barking back at the kid, ready to use it as a chew toy.

Sat Mar 4, 2017, 05:12 AM

conservatism relies upon anger, it cannot exist if people are actually happy with their achievements and with their neighbors. That is why many rich conservative simply needs more, more, more.. Upper-middle-class professionals want to be millionaires, millionaires want to be billionaires. Billionaires want to be gods. The fact is though, no matter what these rich clergy tell their parishioners, money will not make you happy, so like addicts moving from Coke to crystal meth, they keep chasing that ever elusive high that will become much more temporary and much less lasting with each successful hit. Why else would Trump be the poster boy for this age? Here is a man who I have seen on television for 30 years. I still remember when he was a local New York area celebrity, as opposed to what he is now. He has never changed, and will not change, he is always going to be someone chasing a high, and not even pretending to want to build anything lasting or substantial. Sadly, that goes for most of his followers, especially the religious ones and the ones steeped in the dark side of redneck culture. They will not be able to be satisfied with their lives, not competent, not confident enough, tto simply let others be, so they must pursue this manifest destiny will all that is not them is underfoot.

It could be said that every culture has its demons and angels, this is our demon, and sadly, the only times we've got the upper hand in this nation are when our demons crashed the car, made such a horrific mess that they could not deny they need our help. What's dangerous is, in an age of alternative facts, they might just keep on going, long after the car drives off the cliff.
