We are in trouble. We are heading for a constitutional crisis.

This is not going to end well. To many russia ties and people lying about. A president who is completely unstable. A president who has surrounded himself with extremists. There is no way this crazy shit can go on for 4 years. I hope the american people do not get hurt but they elected trump knowing he was nuts. Good luck everyone.

But the crisis officially ended when Nixon resigned.

In the early 1970's, the hard-right wing of the Republican Party wasn't as dominant as it is today. Most of the party was moderate. This allowed for individuals to break ranks with their party. Once President Nixon lost his support from Senate Republicans, he knew he wouldn't survive an impeachment trial.

Bugging DNC in summer 1972 and Nixon's eventual resignation in August 1974?

But we do now and it takes far less time for information--or disinformation--to be made available to the public.

The news cycles in the '60's and '70's were weekly.

What we're seeing now is much like the heading of an infested pustule above the skin. It may be painful when the time comes to remove it, which is why we need to follow protocol to the letter to avoid a secondary infection.

A Constitutional crisis occurs when the government cannot resolve its conflicts and results in a collapse of the orderly functions of the government.

In the current situation, you've only skimmed the surface of the potential crisis. For this discussion, assume that our suspicions about electoral collusion between the Trump Campaign and the Russians occurred. Additionally, let's assume the worst about Donald Trump's financial ties to Russian banks and businesses.

First, the Executive Branch is dangerously compromised. The president and his senior advisors and possibly cabinet members may be in legal jeopardy. But they won't relinquish their power.

Next, the Legislative Branch is politically controlled by the president's party. They are dominated by hard-right ideologues who have demonstrated that they put party before country.

Then, the Judicial Branch, specifically the Supreme Court, is politically equally divided.

If it is undeniably shown that the Trump team had inappropriate connections with the Russians, and they will not step down, then how is this conflict resolved. If Congress doesn't assert itself as a co-equal branch of government and the Supreme Court cannot enforce their rulings, then how is the conflict resolved? Could the military intervene? Would the nation just lurch along during the president's term? Meanwhile, our basic governmental functions begin to fail as their management is dysfunctional.

While I'm not a lawyer nor Constitutional expert, nor am I a Chicken Little. There is great potential for danger in our country's future.

10. Understand this...

THE ELECTION WAS STOLEN.

Yes there are a bunch of loud crazies out there and they are simply window dressing for what is really going on, which we are all learning about now.

Once you understand that major factor, it's easier to weather this storm by knowing we seriously outnumber the crazies, we just have to remove their megaphone and contain the crazy in them. Due process usually takes time, we don't have that as a luxury at this point so the sooner we right the error the better for the whole planet. We all need to stop flogging ourselves and stay on topic... the election was manipulated such that the presidency and probably Congressional seats and some governorships were not truly won but stolen through voter suppression before and during the election.

From the looks on the faces of the SCOTUS members attending the cheato speech the other night, they may be exploring what role they can play in preserving the nation.

Trump is negotiating his resignation and I'm sure it includes a pardon for anything he might have done that's illegal. He'll be willing to throw anyone around him under the bus, that's how he operates. Republican's will feign outrage and use Trump's forced resignation as a rallying cry in upcoming elections. I think you are right about a crisis, only I don't think it's constitutional. It will be between the polarized political factions in our country. Trump supporters will buy the "Obama was behind it", hook, line and sinker because the right wing media will continue to spew it. I don't see any path to reconciliation, it's going to get more and more ugly.

The last week or some with all this info coming out has given me the hope that this will get taken care of. The problem will be the slowness of the republicans to do the right thing. They will when it gets down to saving their own skin with their voters.

I always had a gut feeling Obama wasn't going to just walk away. It'll be fun to see Trump know Obama made sure the info on him was saved and he was after him.

The longer this madness goes on the greater the danger. We need a independent commission. We have to find out what is going on with all these russia connections. They have to force trump to show his tax returns. It's the only way we can clear this mess up.

To keep pence out of it. He was lied to, he didn't know. It's about the only thing they seem to be careful about. It will be same old same old, the GOP will like it more that way, they just got to work up the nerve to do it.
