May turn out to be very well spent. Imo, ihe issue is, how badly might this backfire on them? At best, they'll be able to milk it briefly before quietly hiding their abandonment behind some new news cycle.

But remember, although they may currently feel the need to shore up their base's confidence in them with stunts like this, any results of these investigations will not come from their base but from the investigations. And that laws on the books could be triggered by information uncovered and brought into play by either side. Always these days a huge problem far more to be avoided by Republicans than Democrats.

It's not that amoral hard-core conservatives aren't often very clever, but their very real flaws so often end up destroying them. Look at Newtie, a man with great talent for self aggrandizement--rose to speaker of the house (very briefly) for god's sake, spending the past 20 years buffing his brand so he can sell fake cancer cures. And same almost inevitable and really stupid self destruction for Tom The Hammer DeLay and dozens of others.
