(58,785 posts)But I thought I maybe was going to be increasing my monthly contribution to DU.com, once I knew where to send it.

(1,985 posts)when I tried to log on from my phone and laptop. I went to isitdown.com and they said the site was up. I texted my husband and he responded with it is down. Then I tried again and now I'm on just fine.
Strange.

(505 posts)It was "up" in the sense that the DU domain translated to an IP successfully, the server was reachable, accepted the connection and successfully sent some kind of response to your browser.
Of course, that response was just an error message about a failed database connection. But it's hard for a service like isitdown.com to understand this, so they thought everything is OK and basically just assumed that DU is a website that displays a short text message all the time. It didn't understand that the short message was actually an error message.

(111,076 posts)I had a one-line of gobbledgook at the top of the page.
I should have copied it....perhaps someone could have explained what it meant?

(505 posts)The message just said "No connection" (IIRC) and then printed a database query that was probably supposed to be executed to get the number of top-level forums or something.
So I guess the database server went offline (for maintenance, upgrades, hardware failure, or any reason). Hopefully no hackers involved.

(15,682 posts)I remember that old panic room -before facebook existed. Just finding it was a pain in the ass, iirc. Lol. I hate facebook - except when I need them. Then I resent them because I need them.

(937 posts)The Democratic Underground website had unexpected downtime this afternoon from approximately 4:30PM to 5:30PM ET. This downtime was an unintended consequence of a minor configuration change we made to our database server earlier today. This configuration change caused us to run out of hard disk space for some of our server logs, which in turn caused the site to crash. The problem has now been fixed.
The site has not been compromised in any way. We were not hacked. No data was lost.
We apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
