To Repubs, if you are poor there are only two possible reasons. Either it's by choice and you don't deserve healthcare, or it's God's will and we can't go against that now, can we?

8. Poverty-shaming is slightly more sophisticated
Mon Mar 6, 2017, 08:34 PM

than that. People with money don't say: "Dang, those poor people must like to be poor." Instead, they say things like: "If they really didn't want to be poor, there's all sorts of things those people could do to improve their situation."

Often, people with money don't appreciate how much good luck contributed to their situation, and they also don't appreciate how much bad luck can frustrate people's intentions and actions to get out of poverty. Compared to the mid-20th century, when jobs were relatively plentiful and growth was strong, people today have a much smaller margin for error to stay above the poverty line. In the 60's or 70's, losing a job was much less of a potential disaster than it is today. Today, even losing 1 of 2 jobs in a household can start a downward spiral that's difficult or impossible to reverse.

What good is a $2000.0 tax deduction (the number floated around to replace the ACA subsidies if you are around 20 ish year old, up to $4000.0 for people near retirement age) if you already pay little or no taxes because you are poor ?

Its so ridiculous on its face, I do not understand why people dont see through it.

You receive the credit even if you pay no taxes. But the credit will be less generous than the Obamacare subsidies for most people, and will not be scaled to income. So someone who is barely scraping by will only be able to afford a bare-bones insurance plan, if that.

Mon Mar 6, 2017, 09:55 PM

Like many other Republicans, Congressman Roger Marshal, R KS. said he wants the health care system to rely on the free market rather than Obamacare’s regulations. He measures success in how many people can afford to leave the Medicaid program and enter the private insurance market.

“Just like Jesus said, ‘The poor will always be with us,’” he said. “There is a group of people that just don’t want health care and aren’t going to take care of themselves.”
Pressed on that point, Marshall shrugged.

“Just, like, homeless people. … I think just morally, spiritually, socially, [some people] just don’t want health care,” he said. “The Medicaid population, which is [on] a free credit card, as a group, do probably the least preventive medicine and taking care of themselves and eating healthy and exercising. And I’m not judging, I’m just saying socially that’s where they are. So there’s a group of people that even with unlimited access to health care are only going to use the emergency room when their arm is chopped off or when their pneumonia is so bad they get brought [into] the ER.”

I got into a huge argument with my brother-in-law, who is works in the oil and gas field. He is pretty high up in the industry and makes a lot of money. Social Darwinism is what he believes. If you work hard enough only good things happen. If bad things happen, it is your fault because you didn't work hard enough or weren't smart enough.

When it came to political debate, he wasn't smart enough, but that's another story. We haven't spoken much since then when it comes to family events.

are surrounded by poverty, and have diminished expectations from the day they are born.

They have no clue that their own rotten lives are supported on the backs of millions of invisible workers kept in poverty by low wages through no fault of their own. Poor people work a hell of a lot harder than most Republicans ever thought possible.

That poor folks don't make enough for a nutritious diet and safe housing, let alone saving money for health care and retirement, really doesn't seem to penetrate the cement filling their thick skulls. They seem to think there are money trees to be picked or secret trust funds out there somewhere but poor folks are too damned shiftless to try to access either.

It's why I want to force every single Republican out there to sit down and write up a budget using the Sunday paper, meaning rent, food, utilities, and transportation on a minimum wage paycheck.

It'll never happen, of course, it's just too easy to go on hating everybody their AM radios say it's OK to hate, poor folks topping the list.
