Man who pled guilty to Obama death threats runs for Virginia seat - and wants to ban women voters

DAVID EDWARDS
07 MAR 2017 AT 13:56 ET

A Virginia man is running for House of Delegates after spending 16 months in jail for threatening to kill then-President Barack Obama in 2009.

Nathan Daniel Larson told WUSA that he is running for Virginia’s 31st House District. Election officials confirmed that Larson had collected the required number of signatures to appear on the ballot.

In 2009, Larson sent Secret Service an email saying he wanted to kill President Obama. As a result of being convicted of a felony, Larson lost his voting rights, which Virginia lists as a requirement for running for office. But his rights were restored by Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) after he was released from prison.

Larson, however, believes that women should not have the right to vote, and he is running on a platform of suppressing the rights of women. He also believes that fathers should be able to marry their daughters.

Maybe you ought to try having an informed opinion rather than just spew whatever comes into your head.

The 31st District is a classic purple district. In 2015, a big year for the repubs, the incumbent repub won re-election by 1200 votes (a margin of around 7 percent). Two years earlier, he won by fewer than 300 votes.

However, in 2012, the district went for Obama over Romney and was swept by the Democratic governor/lt. governor/attorney general candidates in 2013. Tim Kaine also won the district when he ran for Senate in 2012. Finally, Hillary Clinton bested Trump by 51-44 in the district in 2016.

This lunatic probably will get only a few votes, but to the extent he gets any, he may help the Democrat in what is a tight district.

It is my belief that Corey Stewart is going to win the GOP nomination for Governor. He was Trumps campaign manager in Virginia and he is using Trumps Tactics to gon up votes. This guy may try to latch onto Corey Stewarts coatails. As a life long resident if Virginia I consider this to be the most important Governors race of my lifetime. This governor will help shape the congressional districts for the next 10 years. Prince William County needs ro stand up in 2018 and make sure that Barbara Comstock doesnt win.

Again, this is a purple district that went for Hillary over Trump by 7 percent and will have an incumbent repub running. The nutjob has no chance whatsoever. Zero. Nada. Zilch. At best he may help the Democratic candidate, but I doubt he'll get 100 votes, if that.

Is that not correct? Not that that has anything to do with what I was saying, just curious.

I'm going to overlook your rude behavior because you probably can't help but knee-jerk.

But I was making a joke by saying I wasn't going to make a joke - because - based on how both Shrub and Trump, as well as other idiotic republicans have gotten into office, so even that particular nutcase had a chance.

It was a commentary on how bad things have gotten.

But you go right ahead and knee-jerk and insult people if it makes you feel all big inside.

Sorry if your feelings were hurt, but maybe you'll think twice before posting nonsense on this board.

This is a winnable race for the Democrats even with a Republican incumbent (who won by only 300 votes in 2013 and by 1200 votes in 2015, a big repub year). It's a district where Hillary clobbered Trump by 7 percent.

Again, sorry if you think I was being rude, but you kind walked into it.

And its not as if he was obligated to tell anyone anything about his background when he asked for their signatures.

Given the disenchantment with the two major parties in this country, its not a surprise that someone could get 125 signatures to run as an independent.

However, once the campaign starts, he's finished.

If he wins, I'll buy you a house.

Its a purple district that went for Hillary over Trump by 7 points and also voted for the Democratic slate for governor/lt. governor/atty general in 2013. The incumbent repub delegate won by 1200 votes in 2015 (a big repub year) and by 300 votes in 2013. The district also went for Kaine in 2012.

The guy needed, and apparently got, 125 signatures to get on the ballot. Back in 2008 he ran as a Libertarian for a seat in the US Congress and got less than 1.5 percent of the vote. And that was before he went to prison. Now the Libertarians want nothing to do with him.

So, no, he does not stand a "good" chance of winning. He stands no chance. On the other hand, one of the two quality Democratic candidates have a shot at flipping this seat.

He actually ran for Congress as the Libertarian candidate in 2008, getting fewer than 1.5 percent of the votes in a district (not the one he's running in now) that has been a safe repub district for years.

The Libertarian party now wants nothing to do with him, so he's running as an independent against a Republican incumbent. There are two solid candidates vying for the Democratic nomination, Sara Townsend, who ran in 2015 (and lost by 1200 votes) and Elizabeth Guzman, a Latina originally from Peru (but a resident of the district for 15 years).

And he got the required 125 signatures to get on the ballot (assuming those signatures are verified). But if you really are serious about wanting a Democrat to win this district, which is entirely possible, you should think about sending money to the Democratic candidate. There are two quality candidates vying for the Democratic nomination, to be decided in a primary in June. Part of the Virginia Democrats strategy, which should be emulated everywhere, of making sure that a Democrat is running in every district that Hillary won in 2016.
