northern Syria
http://www.military.com/daily-news/2017/03/08/us-marines-move-syria-howitzers.html
<snip>
Marines attached to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit quietly moved into Syria weeks ago to establish an artillery base, defense officials confirmed to Military.com on Wednesday.
The move comes as American-backed forces intensify their assault on Raqqa, the Islamic State's capital city.
The Washington Post first reported Wednesday that Marines attached to the MEU -- which is deployed around the Middle East, conducting training in countries including Oman and Djibouti -- had departed their ships and moved into Syria.
A defense official would not speak to the size of the detachment deployed to Syria, but said it included elements of multiple artillery batteries, as well as support personnel, including infantry Marines. It's the first time American artillery support capability has been on the ground in Syria since the fight against the Islamic State began in 2014.

(39,405 posts)a mistake on either side could add a couple of zeroes to that 58K.
Sadly, our nation unbuilding there has had a lot of bipartisan support.
Obama was good at keeping US ground troops out of the mix, but that's little comfort for those on the receiving end, whose combined deaths are probably already well above a million from Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Syria, and now Yemen.

(3,827 posts)The soldiers, belonging to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, are expected to deploy to Kuwait, where they will support members of the brigade already advising and assisting Iraqi troops in defeating the Islamic State.
The troops will support operations to liberate western Mosul in Iraq and also could be involved in similar operations in Syria.
The remainder of the brigade will be leaving Fort Bragg, going to Kuwait to be postured there to do all things Mosul, Raqqa, all in between. So the whole brigade will now be forward, said Lt. Gen. Joseph Anderson, the U.S. Armys deputy chief of staff, G-3/5/7.
