After promising to revitalize inner cities, Trump decides to shred affordable housing

After promising to revitalize ‘inner cities,’ Trump decides to shred affordable housing
He wants to cut billions out of Housing and Urban Development’s budget.

Before, during, and after his inaugural speech, President Donald Trump promised to fix “inner cities,” which he’s conflates with the supposedly crime-infested neighborhoods where African Americans and Latinos live. Less than two months into his presidency, he’s very close to breaking that promise.

Under the Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) latest budget proposal, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) — the federal agency tasked with expanding housing access for low-income families — could stand to lose billions of dollars. According to the Washington Post, the proposal calls for $6 billion to be cut from the department’s budget for Fiscal Year 2018. And the pool of money for public housing repairs and the Community Development Block Grant Program will be hit especially hard.

A “tough-on-crime” president, Trump keeps saying he wants to help poor Black people escape their poverty and violent neighborhoods. He picked Ben Carson to lead HUD and advance his “urban renewal” agenda, and even convinced Black comedian and TV host Steve Harvey to publicly talk up his administration’s efforts. But the latest OMB budget would eliminate billions of dollars in assistance for low-income urban neighborhoods.

“These sorts of cuts could . . . increase the number of families and people that are homeless because housing is less affordable,” President Marc Morial of the National Urban League Morial told the Post. “It’s a slap in the face of working Americans, urban communities, to suggest that you should make all these cuts to buy more tankers, aircraft carriers and missile systems.”

affordable housing and trying to address it in creative ways. Without federal funding, though, it is pretty hard.

To me, when faced with an article like this, my answer is to question why so MUCH of our tax money goes to 'defense,' 'national security' and the MIC instead of to stuff that benefits us. Like single payer healthcare. Or stronger Social Security. Or debt-free post-secondary training at state vo-techs, community colleges, and universities. Those issues have LEGS, folks! If we actually stood for them, won some elections and put them in place; if we became known for harping on them as much as I do, and then when in power stood and delivered, we'd win elections by landslides.

And...you want to hear something horrifying???

The Trump Administration is planning to build and privatize a system of detention camps. An American Gulag Archipelago. https://thinkprogress.org/a-shocking-glimpse-inside-americas-privatized-detention-facilities-for-immigrants-45401c8cf0b7#.cjct01a9n

By ANY MORAL STANDARD, this is fucked up.

prisons that Obama tried to do away with are being resurrected, but this seems a lot more specific and horrific. Prisons for people who didn't commit a crime in many cases.
God, we need to get rid of this menace.

will open up more land for development by scum like him, putting up monstrosities that block out all light in all cities, the interiors described as "luxurious, beeyootiful, everybody will want to live here." This, according to him, is what revitalizes the inner city, not having people who do the work to make it livable afford to live there. Inner cities should belong to the rich. The rest of us will live in a ring of misery outside the cities, far enough away that the view from the top floors of the luxury buildings isn't spoiled.

Once it's all glitzy high rises with chichi shops and bistros at ground level, they will consider it revitalized. With all those tacky people in t-shirts and hoodies gone, it will finally be a perfect city. Never mind none of those chichi shops or bistros can get staff to work in them because nobody wants to commute 2 hours each way for minimum wage. That will be because the poor are lazy.

when he said "fix" he meant remove the people living there now and "gentrify" the neighborhoods.

Funny how tRump and his dad made all their money from tax dollars for public housing. And tRump pays no taxes.

All of his fans knew he was lying about helping poor Black urban dwellers, knew he was lying about aiming to get 95% of Black votes in his next election. That's why he went to white suburban areas to tell all white audiences how much he cared about Blacks in the city. And he and all his nazi fans laughed up their sleeves when he told this whopper. Notice how his stock never dropped on all the nazi dRumpf fan sites, when he started talking 'politically correct' during those campaign events.

It's easy to tell when he's lying. He's completely transparent. When he says something that sounds caring, or human, or motivated by the greater good, he's lying and will never follow through with the promise attached to the statement. When he says something that involves nazism, violence, revenge, and hate, you can bet your bippy he's telling the truth.
