How Far Have We Come Since March 9, 1954.......

it doesn't seem very far these days. Or rather it seems like its miles in the wrong direction. Edward R. Murrow put the information into the public realm and the people and Congress took it from there. There's little hope of the current Congress checking our demagogue in chief, especially since so many of them suffer from the same affliction. At least there's some example from history on where we need to go.

that they are doggedly following this story and doing an excellent job of presenting the facts in a clear, almost prosecutorial way. However, the broad audience isn't there as people choose the news that agrees with their point of view. Congress doesn't give a damn. We don't have the national IQ or attention span to absorb, digest and evaluate the dense information they are presenting. Murrow had a different playing field. (and McCarthy just plain looking and acting creepy was a big factor).

The use of language by McCarthy & Trump is very similar. I get the feeling that its all very well thought out and deliberate. The methods of attacking critics are very much the same. When McCarthy went on See it Now to respond to the show you posted it sounded eerily like what Trump says (and tweets) today.

an interesting place. Jean Shepherd did a show about the midwest and discussed the politics of Wisconsin. The same state produced Fightin' Bob La Follette and Joseph McCarthy. Every state produces these dichotomies. No need to apologize.

It's funny that I do because I was 9 years old in 1954. On the other hand, I also remember the 1952 nominating conventions quite well. I thought the Republicans were awfully dull but the Dems were very interesting in a very rowdy kind of way. Anybody else remember the 40 minute long and very loud, planned demonstrations on the convention floor? I have no idea why but I listened to them on the radio. Conventions were completely different back in the good old days of Joe McCarthy
