than an asset, and that Trump's repeated fuckups mean that Putin's not going to get any of what he wanted? Trump's connections to Russia are looking so dodgy that he doesn't dare do anything that seems favorable to Russia, and if the whole story eventually comes out - not just the connections but the collusion, before, during and after the election - Trump and his administration will be worse than useless to Putin. Then what does he do?

He didn't think Americans would be stupid enough to let him get this far. He was aiming for mischief and ended up causing a tradegy.

He had Trump put in his man as head of the State Department.
He's already gutted the department of experienced people so now Putin essentially controls our state department.
This is no small thing.

And seeing as how they are trying to clean out experienced people everywhere in government and replace them with toadies, even if Putin doesn't control them, which he may, they will make the US incompetent in nearly every area and this will give Russia a huge boost in the ability to be unrestrained.

No, it's a coup that goes much deeper than we originally thought and it's becoming surprisingly effective.
