Dear Senator Schumer: Sessions Is the Democratic Party's Public Enemy Number One

Dear Senator Schumer:

Loved your work during the Clinton impeachment. Loved the way you took care of Alberto Gonzales, too. That is why I am asking you to save your country. The only way we will survive Trump is if a serious investigation of his crimes is made--and the only place that will happen is in the Senate, starting in 2019, when the Senate flips back to Democratic control as we all know that it will---unless some criminals in positions of power have their way.

Which criminal is the most dangerous? Not Trump. As far as the Democratic Senate is concerned, Public Enemy Number One is your former colleague Jeff Sessions.

There is no animal as vicious as a cornered animal. And Trump AG Sessions has backed himself into one hell of a corner. He committed perjury in order to get his present job. Now, the only thing standing between him and what the 2007 Congress did to then AG Alberto Gonzales is a slim Republican Senate majority. Come 2019, if things continue as they are going now, the Senate will likely switch back to Democratic control. And then the investigations will start in earnest. And Sessions will likely end up in jail, or, at the very least, disbarred. So will a lot of Trump officials.

That means that the only thing Sessions cares about right now is holding on to a handful of Republican seats that are up for grabs in 2018. And forcing Democratic senators out of office if they are unlucky enough to come from states with Republican governors. That means firing a whole lot of federal prosecutors and replacing them with lawyers who will persecute Democrats.

Where are Republicans vulnerable? Arizona and Nevada. Look for Sessions and his minions in the Trump secret police aka the DOJ to target any Democrat in these states who might challenge the Republican incumbent. Where are Democrat's vulnerable? Nowhere. But 23 Democrats will have to run for re-election, and in states with Republican Secretaries of State, a fair election may be impossible. Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, North Dakoto, Ohio, Washington, West Virginia all have a Republican SOS--it is very likely that the GOP will attempt (illegal) voter suppression in these states, to which Sessions will turn a blind eye. He might even have his hand-picked federal attorneys prosecute those who try to get out Democratic voters.

Then there are Democratic Senators in states with Republican governors. Take about dangerous living. Sessions will be tempted to try to smear these politicians, indict them in the court of public opinion, drive them from office so that they can be replaced by Republican appointees. Potential targets could include Bill Nelson, Florida, Joe Donnelly, Indiana, both Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen from Maryland, both Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey from Mass., both Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters from Michigan, Claire McCaskell from Mo., Catherine Cortez Masto from Nevada, Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan from New Hampshire, Bob Menendez and Cory Booker from New Jersey, Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich from New Mexico, Heidi Heitkamp from North Dakota, Sherrod Brown from Ohio and Tammy Baldwin from Wisconsin.

In order to initiate frivolous, phony prosecutions against these Democratic Senators from states with Republican governors, Session will need to hire prosecutors who will agree beforehand to persecute certain Democrats. Today’s blanket call for letters of resignation from 46 federal prosecutors is likely intended to allow Sessions to put the legal equivalent of (Russian mafia)hitmen in place. This way, he can prevent the Senate from flipping in 2018. And, if he does his job well, he can give the Republicans the super majority they need to pass any law, no matter how draconian.

Plus, Sessions gets to save his own hide. A win-win from his perspective. A huge loss for Democrats, particularly Senate Democrats.

Senator Schumer, in 2007, you and your fellow Senate Democrats did what needed to be done to eliminate the threat posed by Alberto Gonzales, who boasted openly after the Nov. 2006 elections that he was going to (ab)use the power of his office to take down Democratic politicians.

You are now the minority party in power, but you still have the power to block appointees. Do not be lulled into a sense of false security by Trump’s tanking polls. If Jeff Sessions and his fellow conspirator/traitor Comey of the FBI decide to cook up some preposterous charges against Senate Democrats, the mainstream media will repeat their garbage like the good little propagandists they are, and you will see your fellow Senators fall one by one---until there will be hope left for this country.

Take a good look at which letters of resignation are accepted. And then take an even closer look at the lawyers Sessions tries to bring in to fill key positions in the states listed above. Anyone who is at all questionable should be blocked. Make clear the reason why. Don Siegelman of Alabama should be the Democrats' poster child. This is what the GOP can do--and we won't let them!

Once the resignations are submitted, it would be Trump's decision on whether to accept all of them.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a statement that he was "troubled to learn of reports of requests for resignations from the remaining U.S. Attorneys, particularly that of Preet Bharara."

The Senate Democratic leader said Trump "initiated a call to me in November and assured me he wanted Mr. Bharara to continue to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District."

"While it’s true that presidents from both parties made their own choices for U.S. Attorney positions across the country, they have always done so in an orderly fashion that doesn’t put ongoing investigations at risk. They ask for letters of resignation but the attorneys are allowed to stay on the job until their successor is confirmed," he said.

"By asking for the immediate resignation of every remaining U.S. Attorney before their replacements have been confirmed or even nominated, the President is interrupting ongoing cases and investigations and hindering the administration of justice."
