Ready to Play Nice? No Fucking Way!

There has been much discussion of late as to who voted for Trump and why, and what the attitude of Democrats should or shouldn’t be with respect to those who did.

Many have expressed anger, frustration, even hatred towards Trump supporters. Others have expressed varying degrees of sympathy for those who they feel were misled into supporting such an odious candidate, those who have been systematically brainwashed by FOX-News and RW radio, and/or those who simply vote Republican as a matter of course, without giving any thought to who it is they are supporting.

Some have encouraged reaching out to those who, despite their initial support of Trump, will inevitably become victims of his policies. Others have stated without hesitation that such reaching-out is a dead end, and any efforts in that regard are simply an exercise in futility.

For what it’s worth, here’s my two cents.

From the outset of Trump’s campaign, he presented himself as a boorish bully, a self-agrandizing braggart devoid of what is generally referred to as “any socially redeeming value”. His lack of knowledge about how our government operates and the responsibilities of a POTUS were fully on display. Not once did he demonstrate a scintilla of intelligence – in fact, quite the opposite; his every statements was, without exception, an incoherent tirade of gibberish demonstrative of someone incapable of stringing two sentences together that made any sense whatsoever.

So you have to ask yourself: What kind of person thinks the country should be led by a man who repeatedly demonstrates his lack of intellect? What kind of person thinks that a man who doesn’t know anything about even the bare basics of running a nation is somehow well-suited to doing so?

Throughout his campaign, Trump never shied away from lying – not exaggerating, not fudging the numbers, not stretching the truth, but out-and-out lying about things that were easily debunked.

So you have to ask yourself: What kind of person wants a president who can’t be trusted to tell the truth, even about things that are so readily disproven?

Trump’s temper, and his endless need to lash-out at anyone who he perceived as having crossed him, became the stuff of legend long before Election Day. His “tweets” were rife with vitriol, paranoia, and a total lack of self-control.

So you have to ask yourself: What kind of person thinks that someone who can’t control his own temper – a temper which can be triggered by any perceived slight, any unflattering word, any untoward remark – should be put in a position where he can distance us from our allies, spark an international incident fraught with dire consequences, or even start a nuclear war?

The list goes on – and so do the questions: What kind of person thinks that a president, who represents us on the world stage, should be someone who openly mocks the disabled, brags about “grabbing pussies”, disrespects minorities, disparages immigrants, and promotes the idea that people of certain religious beliefs are a threat to our nation’s safety and well-being?

What kind of person who had access to the information about Trump’s scams – like refusing to pay his debts to hard-working Americans, collecting money for his “charitable” foundation which he then took for his personal use, scamming people through his bogus “university” – decided he was trustworthy enough to hold the highest position in the country?

The answer may seem simplistic, but it is, IMHO, the only answer that makes sense.

The kind of person who voted for Trump is either a fellow bigot/racist/misogynist, a person who doesn’t give a fuck what havoc is wreaked on the nation and the world as long as those damned libruls don’t have a say, a person who believes that as long as the people they despise are persecuted, they don’t care if everyone suffers along with them, a person who is as mentally unhinged as the delusional idiot they voted for, a person whose hatred is so all-consuming, they can’t see anything beyond it – and/or a person who is just too god-damned stupid to have noticed all of the above.

There is always the chance that those who were misled, those who put their faith in the Limbaughs and the Breitbarts, those who are now about to suffer the consequences of their own actions, will regret their choice the minute it hits home – in other words, the minute they realize that the suffering they wished on others is about to befall themselves.

But the fact remains that they voted to put a known bigot, racist, misogynistic, lying incompetent in the Oval Office – and whatever excuses they offer after-the-fact, one is left to wonder whether their regret stems from an honest reassessment of their actions, or merely a too-little-too-late mea culpa in light of having been caught in the trap they so gleefully set for others.

In view of this so-called “president’s” actions, now that he is firmly ensconced in the office so many happily elevated him to, I am as skeptical of Johnny-come-lately penitents as I am of criminals who only regret their crimes when they’ve been caught red-handed, and have no defense to offer other than having fallen in with a bad crowd that they foolishly trusted to their own detriment.

For me, the jury is still out – and will remain out for a very long time to come.

She's not a racist or hater, but her dad was a Repug Admiral and she's been a Repug all her life. She said Hillary was worse than drumpf so she voted for the criminal. She knew he was bad, but stupidly thought Hillary is worse. She doesn't care that he's destroying healthcare since it won't affect her or her rich family and only listens to Faux so doesn't believe he's a Pootie puppet either. She is blinded by party prejudice and thinks everyone is just over-reacting and we'll all be fine just because she's rich enough that he won't hurt her. Her husband is near retiring, so she doesn't care that drumpf will destroy the VA too. I nearly got fired when a peer and I tried to talk to her about this before the election, so I can't say anything. She is also what's wrong with America, people being so blilnded by rw lies that they don't even know the truth. Maybe it will hit her when she has to pay all her children's medical expenses at full price because they are 28 & 30 and have ACA coverage? Don't know if that will be enough. It's also part of the reason I'm retiring this year instead of next when I reach 66. I'd rather get $122 less per month for life than have to support this rw idiot any longer than I absolutely have to.

63 million people voted for him aren't all the exact same person, and are different individuals and voted for him for different reasons.

Painting them all with one brush.
Yelling at them.
Ignoring them.

Will not help us recover.
It will not help us get more votes in congressional races in 2018.
Find some common ground. However elusive it is - there has to be some common ground between you and at least some of those 63 million people. Draw out that common ground, expand on it. Show them where we agree. Show them where we can do better for them than the current government.

There is absolutely no common ground between me and Trump supporters. Poll after poll showed that the vast majority of Trump voters overwhelmingly went for him because they were anti-immigration and anti-abortion.

We don't need to reach out to these scumbags to win elections, we need to get the same young voters that went out in record numbers for Obama in 2008 back.

And we can do that, we have to go further left. There's a reason young voters overwhelmingly went for a 75 year old senator from Vermont. It wasn't because of his looks.

Plus those of 'particular' traditions of 'faith' getting preached at, viewing 'certain' so-called 'christian' televsion.
They are in 'our' midst. I come this short of engaging them. Some are acquaintances and have become a tad 'silent' lately.
"Made their beds..."

They're all over the place. A couple in our church community which I guess is a bit surprising given our tradition of Faith. 'They' just don't get that vocal.

One can be a 'Christian' and be of Democratic persuasion.

Someone I know remarked that maybe Trumputin will get saved. I guess being around the model christians like pence. What, he doesn't have the appearance of salvation to this 'christian' who spoke this observation???? I did remark re: his crotch grabbing and she replied it was just locker room talk. See what I mean.

Misled, brainwashed, fed a steady diet of deception.

I have silent no-pity. If their eyes open and they want to engage, then I will.
What's that saying about deafening silence?

I feel ill writing this. This whole sick thing is not part of my vocabulary.

... WE Democrats have pointed out what we thought was “common ground” all along.

WE represent affordable healthcare for all – they voted for the man who promised to overturn it, and leave the sick to fend for themselves as they die.

WE are the party of responsible education – they voted for the party that wants the Bible to be taught in place of scientific fact.

WE fought for a raise in the minimum wage – they voted for the party that thinks tax-cuts for the wealthy are more important.

WE believe the country is strengthened by diversity – they voted for the idea that only white Christians are acceptable as citizens.

WE stand up for the rights of women and their recognition as equal to men – they voted for a man who thinks women are “pussies” to be grabbed or to be judged only on their sexual attractiveness, and should have no rights over their own bodies.

WE believe that everyone should be judged on the basis of who they are – they elected a man who judges people on the basis of their religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and/or race.

WE want our water to be potable and our environment to be protected – they voted for a man who thinks corporate profits should supersede any concerns about people being poisoned by the water they drink, or the idea of leaving a habitable country to our children.

WE offered a candidate with intelligence and experience, who is respected the world over – they preferred a bloviating liar who has made us the laughingstock of the planet.

WE believe in the sanctity of our democracy and the sanctity of every citizen’s right to vote – they voted for a party that has suppressed the votes of every demographic that opposes their agenda.

WE support social programs that feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and care for the sick – they voted for the party that hypocritically hold themselves out as “Christians” while ignoring the principles that Christ himself admonished his followers to support as part of their faith.

WE believe in patriotism and love of our country – they voted for a man whose devotion to our sworn enemy, Putin, is as evident as it is undeniable.

WE stand for truth and justice – they voted for a man who has been caught lying repeatedly, and who has ignored the law at every turn.

So tell me again what “common ground” there is between us and them. WE will never “agree” with those who are too stupid to recognize that they’ve been had by a party who doesn’t give a shit about their lives, and a con-artist who has made his fortune preying on suckers who are dumb enough to buy his bullshit.

“Common ground” – yeah, that’s gonna happen. Keep dreamin’.

I understand them very well, their vote for trump was a personal affront to our very personhood. I do not want peace with them, I will not pity them when they die from Trumpcare. The song he referred to was “When Jewish blood squirts from the knife, things will go twice as well”.
What followed of course was Kristallnacht.

I think there are some who voted for Li'l Donnie for no other reason than they felt obligated to do so. When everyone around you, your friends, family, and coworkers, all support an obviously unqualified candidate, the easiest solution is to play along. Call it weakness of character. Call it giving in to peer pressure. Call it herd instinct. Call it whatever you want. A heck of a lot of these people will admit to being low information voters. Again, it's easier just to agree with everyone around you and not take the time to investigate the facts.

While I agree that there are many among them who do not deserve our admiration for realizing that they shit on all of America and themselves, I do think there ought to be some measure of leniency for those who truly want to change. If these people receive nothing but vitriol from us and ostracism from their erstwhile compatriots, we lose their support. At this point, we need all the support we can muster for town halls, protests, and writing letters to congress.

Don't even ask me how I plan to "test" everyone's allegiance; I have no idea. I'm simply asking for a little wiggle room for those who have seen the light, are willing to educate themselves, and want to join the cause.

I understand "going along to get along". I understand joining in water-cooler discussions at the office by agreeing with comments about what a great guy that Trump fella is, and yeah, sure, he's got my vote!

I understand over-the-fence conversations with a neighbour who thinks Trump is the messiah who will save the country from ruin, and refusing to disagree for the sake of keeping the peace. I understand telling your mother-in-law at Thanksgiving dinner that you agree with her praise of The Donald in order to avoid a food fight at the table.

But once you step into the voting booth, no one knows who you voted for, or whether you actually went along to get along with your co-workers, your neighbours, or your MIL.

Your vote is YOUR VOTE, and no one will ever know who that vote was cast for. So while going along to get along may seem a reasonable excuse for not rocking the boat in public, it totally fails as a reason for not doing the right thing in private when it actually counts.

from DT supporters in Tennessee, Democrats and SJW's were too worried about Transgender bathroom rights while the factory closed. Never mind the reason it closed was because of profit driven Capitalism that screws the employee. This was an anti-establishment year, and DT just happened to be the anti-establishment candidate left after the primaries.

They just figured "What we have done before hasn't worked. Let us go totally outside the box". They didn't care about his comments because as DT said "I have heard Bill Clinton say worse on the golf course." They want the world as it was in the 1980's, with good paying jobs, and Miley Cyrus not twerking on their TV's.

We also got out-played by DT. My former boss is a lot like him. She is crazy like a fox, and is a showperson. Totally unpredictable, but everything always seemed to go her way.

... maybe "guilty" is overstating it. Perhaps I was just aware of how awful it was for me to feel that way. But after I thought about it, I decided that some people DESERVE the consequences of their poor choices and their stupidity. Sometimes, the only way people can learn and change is not through logic, and not through their willingness to listen to and understand someone's arguments and reason. For many of these stubborn (and gullible) individuals, the only thing that can change their minds is suffering, hitting rock bottom, losing their jobs, their possessions, their loved ones. Maybe they'll learn a valuable lesson and not repeat their mistake.

45. Lotto ticket
Sat Mar 11, 2017, 12:09 PM
Mar 2017

This analogy does not apply to most Trump voters, just some of them.

It is the middle of the month. A family of five is living in a rental house. Rent is a thousand a month and due in nine days. Food costs $100 a week. They just cashed a paycheck but had to pay cash for a small fuel oil shipment to keep the house warm enough to live in. They filled up the gas tank so the bread winner can get to work. They have $80 to get them to the next paycheck which won't be enough to pay their rent, not even late. The land lord has had it with them being late on payments.

They can budget their remaining $80 wisely and the kids will still end up going hungry and the family will still get thrown out on the street. Or they can take half of it and buy some lotto tickets. The odds of winning are ridiculously low, embarrassingly low. But it is dimly within the realm of possibility. If they win big they can afford food for the kids and they can keep their home. If they lose, as is extremely likely, they will run out of money a few days earlier than they would have had they not gambled on those lotto tickets. They gamble on an extreme long shot. At the stage they are at they feel there is nothing really left to lose, they will get screwed anyway if they "act responsibly" and spend their last few dollars on 8 more jars of peanut butter instead.

The above is not a literal description, rather it is an allegory for mental desperation. Some Trump voters were not comfortable with their votes, they were at the point of just giving up. Judgement was suspended.

Couldn't agree more. It's time to play with republikans the way they played with Obama - bare knuckle brawl. We have a communist president in the Oval Office, and who knows how many operatives destroying or " dismantling" our government ( Bannon and Co).
This situation is very serious, and I can only hope that people with much more influence and power than myself, can and will do something to get thus fascist president and his staff of idiots out of the White House. Time will tell. Oh, and by the way, if the NSA is monitoring these posts, I am NOT advocating violence of any sort.

I really think that the brainwashing is too deep and the corporate spin machine will continue to gloss over and ignore. And for every 'repentant' Trump voter, there's probably millions more who just don't give a shit and never will.

I guess the jury is still out for me as well, I am too weary (and wary) of all the bullshit.

57. Republicans have been playing the bigotry card
Sat Mar 11, 2017, 05:29 PM
Mar 2017

since LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964. Goldwater ran on States Rights. Republican code for the restoration of Jim Crow laws and eventually slavery. The morally challenged who support Trump have no place in a civil society. I have removed them from my life because life is too short to suffer fools. I find it impossible to have a reasonable discourse with them. In fact they make my skin crawl.
Only a nut would ridicule a cripple about their handicap. Trump is that nut. If you see fit to ridicule the least among us, get the fuck out of my life.
It's ironic that those who see victimizing our weakest as a good character trait are the morally bereft and brain poisoned from Pox News and hate radio. There was a time when I offered them my good counsel free of charge because it was how people should treat one another. We are all in this together. Trump has driven a wedge between old friends and family members, and that is reprehensible. His poison has seeped into America's soul, and for that Dante has a special place reserved for Trump and those like him, the Ninth Circle.
When his unwitting dupes realize they have drunk the Kool Aid it will be to late for them and unfortunately the Trump victims who voted for someone besides this toxic swine.
There is a curse on this country and by extension all of humanity. The curse is Donald Trump, the world's most immoral scumbag.
It seems the only one who can stop him now is the guy who put him in power, and that's because he has the piss videos.

would the pee videos? They will just say, fake news, and call it a day. That's what they said about the P grabbing. At least the pee videos, as far as we know, are CONSENTING ADULTS. Both words are important. So, they were in Russia. The RW will say it wasn't his fault, with logical abandon and straight faces. (After all, Flynn wasn't fired for treason with the Russians, but for lying to the VP. The VP didnt know about Flynn and the Russians because he said so, over and over and over. The facts are contradict him, but they are pissed off at the liberals because they keep bringing up those facts, "trying to take down trump."

I don't think there is much hope for most of them. I don't think TrumpCare will do it, because most of the trumpsters didn't have Obamacare. Most people who have it, like it.

They want to see the liberals suffer. "You are either for us or against us." You are either a Fox news Repub or a lib.
They are loving it, I tell you. Eating it up. The more outrageous, the better, cuz he's giving it to the liberals.
Even if it brings some suffering to them, within limits, they are getting to see the liberals and what Romney called the 47% suffer.(If Romney were Trump, the next day, he could just say, "I didn't say that." KellyAnne could just say, that's just what he said, not what is in his heart."

One reason they hate us is because we are generally smarter. They hate that we know it. They hate that we are "do gooders." They have de legitimized us and de personalized us as a group. It sounds like we are doing the same. I feel just like most of the people have stated here in DU that they feel. I don't like them. I don't want to be around them. They truly are deplorable, which, of course, they love.

I cannot bother with anyone who supported him because they are as stupid and insane as the current pile of fat sitting in the oval office. I won't mind if they locked up the whole low-class family with him, the dopey sons, Venus and Adonis [who have to read everything for the functionally illiterate cheeto and then explain to him what the document said] along with the illegal porn star resident of TRUMP TOWERS.

Thanks for sharing.

Democrats need to learn that we can get republican votes if we just talk civil to them.
And, no, some are so far out there that it will never happen. Still, we need to take the
high road and curb 'our arrogance' - meaning, treat them civilly even if we vehemently
disagree with them. The idea is to gain supporters, not push them away.

They can take their racism, their bigotry, their Islamaphobia, their xenophobia, their homophobia, their misogyny, their fake Christianity, and their abject stupidity and shove it where the sun don't shine.

"Vehement disagreement" doesn't come close to describing what decent people think of those who put an incompetent, self-serving, lying Idiot in the White House.

What we have here is not a "failure to communicate" - it is a flat-out REFUSAL to compromise ONE GOD-DAMNED INCH with those who think deporting "illegal" mothers away from their children, taking food stamps away from hungry families, and taking affordable healthcare coverage away from the those who need it, is acceptable.

And BTW, I hope when the Deplorables are shoving the aforementioned up their asses, they leave room for the Republican party's dicks - because they're about to get an ass-fucking from the very people they voted for.

If you don't want to be called "a Deplorable", there's an easy way to do that: STOP ACTING LIKE ONE.

67. As in anyone who ...

... doesn't want to be labelled "deplorable" should stop acting deplorably.

This notion that Dems have failed to "message to all people" is ludicrous on its face. Our message has been clear: We stand for the betterment of ALL citizens via affordable healthcare for ALL, voting rights for ALL, tolerance for and acceptance of ALL, jobs for ALL, etc.

The Deplorables soundly rejected that message by voting for Trump/Republicans who consistently stand for exclusion, and the elimination of programs and initiatives that serve ALL rather than the few.

"We had that in the FDR days."

What we didn't have in the FDR days was FOX-News literally brainwashing the populace. We didn't have RW hate radio promoting the scapegoating of minorities, and convincing people to vote against their own best interests. We didn't have 24/7 news outlets giving airtime to politicians who outright LIE without challenging them, or presenting the facts that disprove those lies.

We didn't have an internet where utterly ridiculous stories are widely circulated within minutes, and become accepted as "fact" merely because they've been repeated thousands of times per hour.

In this last election, the Democrats spoke out loud and clear to EVERY voter, not just those of their own party. They were abundantly clear as to their position on issues that affect ALL Americans - and saying otherwise flies in the face of reality.

I stand by the Democratic message being "just fine". You disagree.

So how do YOU think Dems can win elections? By taking the opposite stance? By"compromising" with bigots, racists, homophobes and xenophobes? By abandoning their long-held principles in order to win the votes of the unprincipled?

YOU are the one who thinks the Democratic message is faulty - I don't. So let's hear YOUR thoughts on where we've gone wrong.

Most of the Democratic message is spot on - some of the message needs to be more progressive.

My original point was to have Dems speak to *all* people even thou we disagree with them and they disagree with us. The only way to win elections is to have more people vote for Dems.

I answered your question - now answer mine: You said the Dem's message is 'just fine' and you accurately pointed out the huge problem with right-wing hate media. So, how do Dems start winning more elections?

They are nothing but white supremacist, misogynistic, homophobic people who need to crawl back under their rocks.

However, some conservatives never heard these things because their only news outlets didn't report them, and they didn't check any other sources. Check out this Columbia Journalism Review article about how right wingers are less likely to access more mainstream media like CNN or the Hill - if they get their news from Fox or Breitbart, then that's where they go, period. This is probably why Trump won, this, the Russian hack, the traitor Comey and all the rest of the Republican hate-noise machine.
