Spicer: Trump didn't mean wiretapping when he tweeted about wiretapping

(CNN)The White House on Monday walked back key point of President Donald Trump's unsubstantiated allegation that President Barack Obama wiretapped his phones in Trump Tower during the 2016 election.

Namely, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Trump wasn't referring to wiretapping when he tweeted about wiretapping.

"I think there's no question that the Obama administration, that there were actions about surveillance and other activities that occurred in the 2016 election," Spicer said. "The President used the word wiretaps in quotes to mean, broadly, surveillance and other activities."

Wiretapping is a narrowly defined surveillance activity that involves tapping into "a telephone or telegram wire in order to get information," according to Merriam-Webster dictionary.

This isn't child's play, it's real life. Plus, he demeaned a former U.S. president along the way.

"We can argue all day long about who accused whom of wire tapping, but the truth of the matter is that President Trump is really mad about how everyone's quoting him verbatim. So let's just agree that both sides have a lot to apologize for, and the Democrats really need to step up and acknowledge their role in all of this right now."

Yeah, I remember. Sen. Kyl (thankfully now a former senator) was holding forth on the Senate floor in 2011 when he claimed that over 90% of Planned Parenthood's services were for abortions. When someone (okay, everyone in the civilized world) pointed out that he was off by a factor of 30 or more, Kyl offered his lame "not intended to be a factual statement" defense.

Spicer could claim he was being truthful if he could show President Obama reading a newspaper in 2016 with a story about the election in it: "See? That's surveillance, or maybe other activities. But there it is! Suck it, libtards."
