If I remember correctly, he used to be up front about it but became a little more guarded after potential political liabilities were pointed out to him.

When he was running for vice president the Nuns on the Bus followed him around trying to shame him and I've often said he must have skipped Catechism the day the Acts of Mercy were discussed.

and I clearly remember Sister telling us that one way our parents met their obligations to the Acts of Mercy was by paying taxes for programs that helped the poor.

Of course, I had pre-Vatican II nuns. I'm not so sure little Paulie Ryan would be such an ass if he had had to contend with Sister Mary Terminator and her ruler (though she waved her ruler a lot, I never actually saw her use it on someone - the threat was enough.)
