Leaving aside the scope... nice... just now Rachel said Trump refused to release his taxes and it was litigated in the 2016 election and people voted for him anyway.
Sorry Rachel... YOU CAN NOT SAY the tax issue didn't matter in the election because Trump won. There were TWO elections... one of REAL VOTERS who rejected Trump... and a second EC election
The EC has no "motives". It litigated NOTHING about Trump refusing to release his taxes. The EC is a mindless, antidemocratic, winner take all, voting scheme that has little to do with the REAL motivations REAL voters had. So say otherwise gives false moral legitimacy to the Trump Junta.

(1,629 posts)If true... then you're right. It does sound like a Trump Junta statement.
Sorry... I'm over sensitive to this issue because I hear so many regular reporters making similar claims... like NPR's Cookie Roberts and I believe Chuck Todd.
Now I'm going to have to listen to the rebroadcast.

(1,629 posts)try rereading my OP for the reasons I was concerned. IT'S NOT ABOUT TAXES. It's about how the 2016 election is incorrectly framed as Trump is president because of how/why the VOTERS voted.
Trump was IMPOSED on a nation that REJECTED HIM.
That should be the ONLY frame Dems use.

(1,629 posts)I wasn't that careless after all...
Whether it was something the Trump Junta said at some other time... very possible.

(10,500 posts)The first election was the one that was taking place until 11 days before election day.
The second election was the one that happened after the FBI intervened to rig the whole thing for Donald Trump.

(1,629 posts)I don't doubt that Comey had some effect in depressing the HRC vote and maybe even encouraging some to vote for Trump. But it was THE EC that handed Trump the victory after he was clearly REJECTED by the People.
Elections are to measure the proverbial will of the People and since it's a measure of the judgements of tens of millions of real voters... only the Popular vote can convey moral legitimacy to the winner. The EC is an antidemocratic abomination that NO free people should put up with. It's now create TWO morally illegitimate presidents in just the last 16 years and it now clearly shows a GOP bias. But then so does the antidemocratic Senate where Dems now represent 33 million more Americans than do the GOP... yet the GOP controls the Senate.
Dems need to wake up that the biggest threat to their agenda and to protect their signature programs is our antidemocratic system.

(10,500 posts)Without Comey's intervention to help Trump the election would been very different.
Worst case scenario would have had Clinton winning by 6 points with 333 electoral votes. That is assuming the race narrowed in the final 2 weeks.

(1,629 posts)but to just look at Comey misses the REAL issue... that we have a system that can steal victory from a candidate the People want... and can install someone REJECTED by the People. The EC interferes with the very concept of self government.
StevieM
(10,500 posts)are the real issue.
The FBI rigged the election. They repeatedly intervened to help the Republicans. That also defeats the concept of self-government.
I think Comey caused many voters to outright shift from Clinton to Trump, as well as inspiring potential Trump voters to go vote and potential Clinton voters to stay home.
