The words just gave me a chill

I believe that history repeats itself. Let's hope our response isn't the same as it was then.

I've been reading a lot lately, and most of it isn't very cheerful. But I just want to be aware of past history to recognize the dark paths that we see today.

Timothy Snyder's Bloodlands is next for me. Yikes.

It all came home to me starting when the Supreme Court selected Bush as President. That was a true blow to our Constitution. At the time I hoped it wasn't a mortal blow, but then followed 9/11 and the drums of war went into overdrive and it was the media doing the wardance. Then followed Shock and Awe, the Blitzkrieg of Baghdad, where an entire city was massively bombed for days and days to "soften" them up. Torture in Abu Ghraib. There was also massive cluster bombing in Afghanistan as well as torture. Prisoners taken to Guantanamo because they were "enemy combatants", a whole new invented description of the enemy which gave our government the right to hold them indefinitely and forever. That was the trashing of the Geneva Convention where we went on to break international laws and agreements.

It was all normalized. Step one allowed step two to happen and so on. A Presidency like Trump's is no accident or freak of nature. It's not an aberration of history. It's a logical end to a long sustained effort to normalize the outrageous from way before the Supreme Court Selection.

But I feel that some of the media are actually beginning to do their job again. That's a glimmer of hope.
