Im over the Democratic strategy of trying to reach out to disaffected white voters. When the books are written about this era, and they will be, the story wont be about how Democrats couldnt connect with these votersit will be about how stunningly wrong these voters were and how they couldnt even identify why they were disaffected. When youre against Obamacare but for the Affordable Care Act, Im not sure your opinion on the matter really merits much consideration. And Im also having trouble generating much sympathy for those Trump voters who are about to lose their health care insurance. When someone tells, and shows, you who they are, believe them.

(10,291 posts)how FABULOUSLY successful the broken record technique is.
There IS no liberal media...but oft repeated lies become the truth. We can't let them frame the narrative because they DON'T KNOW what they're framing.

(52,116 posts)how do we effectively counter relentless propaganda from foxnews and hate radio... and now, also, from the white house?
obama and the democrats saved the economy from disaster, created the longest expansion on record, nearly tripled the stock market, created millions of jobs, cut unemployment in half, and got health care for millions of people.
many of the primary beneficiaries were "disaffected white voters".
yet this demographic in particular has been bombarded with lies and confusion from the right-wing propaganda machine to make them think that it's all actually bad for them somehow. or, at least, it can't be good if it involves a black man in the oval office.
we've become good at identifying propaganda, but not very good at countering it.

(10,291 posts)They don't *like* Obama. THINK about that.
Let that sink in a minute.
They *LIKE* John Wayne. They *LIKE* Reagan. They *LIKE* Authority. They *LIKE* being TOLD, not reasoned with.
They need to be TOLD to sit down and stfu because ditto heads can't be independent thinkers by fucking definition.

(31,261 posts)employers are Local Government, State Government, Federal Government, Hospitals that treat a large retired base, Service Businesses which depend on serving the employees of the first four employers. During the 2008 downturn, the economy of the area cratered, lots of people unemployed. Being a professional in work unrelated to the health of my local economy, I was not affected.
Trump and republicans are proposing drastic reductions in almost every single one of the four primary employers, yet, my county voted for Trump and Rubio and has a republican in the US House and State Senate. Almost makes me want to see people that vote republican suffer.

(52,116 posts)come election time 2020, your community might be in dire straits due to actions directly tied to donnie's signatures.
yet republicans will remain convinced that donnie did everything right and it's all somehow still obama's fault.
sigh.

(47,434 posts)I wish that Democratic candidates in these districts - there were some, were there?- would have gone to the same cafes and churches and talked one on one or with small groups and explained to them that their disability checks and their health care all come from the government - the same one that Trump vowed to destroy.
Perhaps, if only 10,000 votes could have been changed: in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan, these states would have gone to Hillary.
I think that this has always been our problem. We were proud to have educated, well spoken candidates, starting with Adlai Stevenson, through JFK, Michael Dukakis, Bill Clinton, John Kerry and Obama. But only Clinton had the unique combination of being highly educated, articulate and with a magic touch to reach many voters. Obama reached many, of course, but with him it was the added urgency of electing a black president.
This is why I am hoping that Cory Booker will consider running. I think that he, too, has this magic touch.

(31,261 posts)and had lunch with locals. One of my criticisms of Hillary was she didn't spend more time on the campaign trail, giving life to Trump's lie that she was ill. President Obama visited many small places, stayed in homes, eat in small cafes during his two runs. Just gaining 10,000-15,000 votes that way made an enormous difference.
