Trump Presidency Has Filled Chris Murphy's Campaign Coffers
The election of President Donald Trump has been very good for Sen. Chris Murphy, as his rising national profile and whispers about running for president are rapidly filling his campaign war chest.
On Wednesday, Murphy wrote in an email to supporters that he'd raised at least $2 million so far this year — more than 55,000 individual contributions with an average donation of less than $40, much of that through online donations. The campaign will officially report its first-quarter fundraising numbers in mid-April.
"When we file our report, I want everyone paying attention to see our numbers as proof that this fledgling progressive resistance movement is only getting larger, and that we are ready for a fight," Murphy, who is up for re-election in 2018, said in the email.
The $2 million-plus is a sharp uptick from Murphy's previous quarter. He raised $324,088.82 in the last three months of 2016.
