The Republican budget, crafted by the man with no soul, Paul Ryan, takes a chainsaw to Medicaid, food stamps, Pell grants, Supplemental Security Income, and anything else that makes life more tolerable for the poor.
The proposals would remove 14 to 20 million people off the Medicaid rolls and 10 million people off food stamps. In fact, 62% of the cuts from the budget are to programs that assist the poor and moderate-income Americans.
. . .
This cruelty by the federal and state governments towards the needy will result in many Americans going to bed hungry, unable to afford a college education, and without shelter. To sum it up, Congress will fail nearly 100 million Americans for a larger defense budget.
Robert Greenstein, the founder and president of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and Washingtons leading advocate for poor and low-income Americans, said the following:
Ive been working on these issues since 1972. This is by far the gravest threat to the safety net, and to low-income people, that Ive seen in my close to half a century of working on these issues. I think theres a potential in the first seven months, by the August recess, for Congress to pass policies that do more to increase poverty and hardship and widen inequality than weve seen in half a century.

(90,633 posts)...because otherwise I don't know what to say to you. The members of this board are politically engaged, to say the least. People who wanted to essentially sabotage the Party and candidate by voting 3rd party were shown the door.
Hillary got 3 million more votes than Red Don. Her message got across to the majority of American voters, as I am sure you will agree. Whatever flaws there were in the campaign, she won the vote.
Every time I look at "what happened" to the outcome, I keep bumping up against the FACT that we got fucked. We fought back as best we could, and we still got fucked. Trump is beyond being a "useful idiot" for Putin, he is a fucking Trojan Horse. The country got invaded, and Hillary and the rest of the Dems were the first casualties in the war. DU itself only survives because whoever took the site down was possibly only toying with us.
We were walking down the street on a sunny day going about our business when we were attacked. We got fucked.
THAT was "your and my role in getting here."
Like all survivors of assault, people here have good days and bad days, and some folks have been damn near suicidal. But we are survivors and we are hauling each other up as best we can, because of the magnitude of the work that must be done. What we don't need is any more of the blame that has been leveled at us as survivors, or the self-blame that comes with the territory. All evidence considered, more of it each day, indicates that the FACT that we got fucked over was not our fault.

(14,530 posts)I don't think I could love you more right now. Al the BS about how bad a campaigner Hillary was and how the Democratic Party didn't get their message across should be laid to rest. You said what I have been saying with a lot less "fucks" in your post than I would have
Hekate
(90,633 posts)Not to mention the finger pointing about how the assault was all our own fault. The psychological effects have been all too reminiscent, right? Identifying what happened is important, and that includes naming the perps in public.
Admitting we were assaulted and naming the perps is not claiming a false victimhood and it is not wallowing in weakness. It is telling Truth to terrifying Power and it is reclaiming our strength.

(4,033 posts)We went to a indivisible meeting and ended up with 60 postcards that we are supposed to send to our elected morons. I've decided that there is no point in discussing issues, beacuse they don't give a damn what we think. Instead, I will just write:
Matthew 25:40 - King James Version (KJV)
40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

(15,805 posts)Yeah, I understand they don't care, but hopeless and desperate people are driven to do desperate things. Whatever assistance they were getting is immediately pumped back into their local communities, supporting all kinds of jobs, services and businesses; what happens to all those folks?
The Republicans want to push all the responsibilty down to the states, but by giving them a fraction of the money need to support those who need assistance it will be impossible. Most states pass those stupid balances budget laws, and no politician will put their name on a bill to raise taxes to pick up the slack.
As poverty increases, neighborhood blight reduces home values, more jobs at lost, tax revenues fall... if this sounds familiar, we've gone down this Depression road before. Obama save us from a repeat, but Trump and his clowns don't have the chops to stop a 3rd wave.

Nickeling-'n'-diming needy kids so those poor, put-upon, aggrieved rich folks could get bigger tax breaks.
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph - we go through this shit EVERY TIME some CON gets into the White House. And let's not forget this is the SECOND consecutive CON to get into the White House through cheating, trickery, and deceit. Don't forget - bush/cheney stole their way in, too.
