Actually, most days you can color me hyperventilatingly anxious after only 30 minutes of news.
The beginning of January brought the first Social Security check to include the whopping $3 cost of living adjustment. A couple weeks later I was notified by Social Services that the increase in my income was sufficient to warrant a reduction in my food assistance, so they cut my SNAP benefit by $8.
Ive screwed up by listening to Paul Ryan and Tom Price and Mick Mulvaney talk about what they intend to do to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and pretty much all of the social safety net that seniors (like me) and the disabled (like me) and the poor (like me) depend on.
The local newspaper just ran a series on the critical dearth of affordable housing in our area, a scary reality with which I am well acquainted. Our property manager had brought the paperwork to renew the lease just a few days before that story came out; after initialing all 27 pages, I signed the renewal, and yes, the rent is going up next month.
This week the Housing office called to remind me of the annual recertification process for Section 8. Following the inspection, I took the paperwork to the office; as the caseworker reviewed it I asked if there would be any changes with the new guy in charge of HUD. She just shook her head and mumbled that no one knows what to expect.
This afternoon I spent an hour on the phone with my baby sister who entered her 60s last year. Shes the level-headed one in the family, and has done well enough to provide for them into their golden years. And she told me that shes had trouble sleeping ever since November. Seems theres plenty of nervous to go around. Dammit.
