Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIs Tillerson the most dangerous sec of state ever? Is his taunting of North Korea designed to start
a war? Why on earth would a rational person challenge a despotic maniac ruler ( no I don't mean trump, this time) who has nuclear weapons?
To suggest that a first strike may be needed is beyond irresponsible. North Korea, delusional or not, will see this as a declaration of war. Actually a restart of the original Korean War. Note to right wing: China was totally involved in the war and would be again.
The North Koreans will see this as giving them no choice but to attack first. They know that any first strike on our part will primarily be to decapitate the government.
Our government seems to have lost its collective mind. Republicans will not be happy until they have used nuclear weapons against somebody, maybe anybody, just as long as they get to use them. Within minutes of that happening you will see suspension of the constitution and draconian military law enforcement engaged. This seems to be all about part of a preplanned agenda that could very well risk all of us in nuclear brinkmanship.

(31,980 posts)We have been told over and over again N. Korea has no capability to fire nuclear missiles. You mean that's wrong? They do have it? Do you think they are going to invade those countries?

(7,908 posts)Tokyo (or maybe it was the Japanese islands, I don't remember which) several weeks ago. They have no ability to invade conventionally, but they have the ability now to wreak massive destruction on U.S. allies in the region (and that's not even factoring in the capabilities of the People's Republic of China).

(16,063 posts)On February 7, 2016, roughly a month after an alleged hydrogen bomb test, North Korea claimed to have put a satellite into orbit around the Earth. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe had warned the North to not launch the rocket, and if it did and the rocket violated Japanese territory, it would be shot down. Nevertheless, North Korea launched the rocket anyway, claiming the satellite was purely intended for peaceful, scientific purposes. Several nations, including the United States, Japan, and South Korea, have criticized the launch, and despite North Korean claims that the rocket was for peaceful purposes, it has been heavily criticized as an attempt to perform an ICBM test under the guise of a peaceful satellite launch. China also criticized the launch, however urged "the relevant parties" to "refrain from taking actions that may further escalate tensions on the Korean peninsula".[11]
While some North Korean pronouncements have been treated with skepticism and ridicule, analysts ( American military ) are treating the unusual pace of North Korean rocket and nuclear testing in early 2016 quite seriously. Admiral Bill Gortney, head of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, told Congress in March 2016, "It's the prudent decision on my part to assume that [Kim Jong Un] has the capability to miniaturize a nuclear weapon and put it on an ICBM," suggesting a major shift from a few years earlier.[12]
North Korea appeared to launch a missile test from a submarine on 23 April 2016; while the missile only traveled 30 km, one U.S. analyst noted that "North Korea's sub launch capability has gone from a joke to something very serious".[13] North Korea conducted multiple missile tests in 2016.[14]

(31,980 posts)And was being somewhat sarcastic in my post. I think we should take N. Korea seriously but that view has been derided here as war mongering against a country that is "all talk and no action."

Trump is bad enough but surrounded by people who don't know what they don't know and a willing GOP congress - it's all a horrendous perfect storm.
