Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsMy girl friend was worked to Death, recently.
I know her as BaeKimEunji. She lives in South Korea. Her sister told me today that Eunji was working too many extra hours. Like up to 20 hours a night. Well the other night, she was so exhausted, she drove home and fell asleep behind the wheel. Her car crashed and she died as a result.
She has left behind two gorgeous daughters who will probably either go live with their Aunt or grandmother. They are devastated.
You might say, so what, that happened in South Korea... well, just think, with our current administration they expect to be rid of over time and minimum wages. That means, other family members right here in America will be driving home sleepy, and might even die coming home. This should never, ever be this way..
This sucks, badly, that the Corporations allow bosses to be bullies and make employees work over time with no extra pay, and being so tired, they fall asleep at the Wheel. Republican's don't care...Republicans think they are just worker drones. Their lives have no meaning to Republicans.
Its going to get worse in this country, and with them in charge, well, all we can do is sit back and watch it happen, until the new election days come around. But in the mean time we best fix things like the voting machines and making sure everyone's vote counts.
oh, and I miss you Eunji..very much. May your spirit be free and in a state of peace. Love yui..

(41,831 posts)Owners don't want to pay over time so they either work their employees to death, or... they die like this, lack of sleep behind the wheel. And, employers don't care, they will just hire another grunt to work to death.

But I am sure you will be happy to know that Foxconn has recently installed 40,000 robots and is installing tens of thousands more each year to eliminate the humans.

(31,963 posts)Actually Foxconn suicides are lower than the rest of China.
The Foxconn suicides was a suicide spate linked to low pay at the so-called "Foxconn City" industrial park in Shenzhen, China, that occurred alongside several additional suicides at various other Foxconn-owned locations and facilities in Mainland China. The 18 attempted suicides by Foxconn (Chinese: 富士康 employees resulted in 14 deaths. The suicides drew media attention, and employment practices at Foxconnone of the worlds largest contract electronics manufacturerswere investigated by several of its customers, including Apple and Hewlett-Packard (HP).Foxconn is a major manufacturer that serves high-profile consumer electronics firms such as Dell, Motorola, Nintendo, Nokia, and Sony.
That being said, ABC News and The Economist both reported that the suicide rate of Foxconn employees was actually lower than the country's overall suicide rate.

(21,646 posts)The poor conditions in Chinese factories were highlighted in 2010 when 14 workers killed themselves at Apple's biggest supplier, Foxconn.
An undercover BBC Panorama investigation also claimed staff often worked to the point of collapse.
In the BBC footage, exhausted workers were caught falling asleep on their 12-hour shifts at the Pegatron factories.
One undercover reporter had to work 18 days in a row despite repeated requests for a day off.
The repeaters found that the standards promised by Apple were routinely breached on the factory floor.

(16,245 posts)And, in fact, it does happen here. Judge Gorsuch seems to approve of working people to death as well, or nearly to death, and firing them if they seek safety.
He dissented in a case involving a truck driver who left his broken-down rig in the cold, even though the truck's heater was broken. He left to warm up and the company fired him. Gorsuch thinks that okay. Fortunately the other two judges disagreed. But this is the man Trump wants on the Supreme Court.

Also to add that people died fighting for the 8 hour work day in this country . What will happen with labor laws is unsure now but let them not die in vain. We workers need to continue to fight the uncaring greed.

(41,831 posts)In Japan they call it...Karōshi (過労死 ?), which can be translated literally as "overwork death" in Japanese, is occupational sudden mortality. The major medical causes of karōshi deaths are heart attack and stroke due to stress and a starvation diet. But if if one is so tired they fall asleep at the wheel, its probably Karoshi as well as its a work related Death and hey, NOW that freaking Manager will have to hire someone else to work those DEATH HOURS.

(41,831 posts)As I said this happened in South Korea, but were starting to see signs of it here. People working long and longer hours trying to make ends meet. And, if they were smart, they would pull off the road and sleep rather than drive impaired. But too many people probably have other stuff in mind, like what's going on with their family, how great it will be to get home and have a glass of wine before bed.. etc and they nod off and bam! That's it, game over. No Reset, just move on and hope others will hear about this and consider the consequences of making those exta bucks by working those extra late hours. Bam! that's it, game over.

(17,296 posts)Apparently they have a term for this in Japan, perhaps you're familiar: karoshi, meaning "death from overwork." It is generally associated with suicides caused by work stress, but what happened to your friend certainly sounds like it's fatigue related. What a shame.

(29,225 posts)corporate social responsibility and mindful leadership are on the map now, and the trend is toward more of this, especially across Europe... it's happening slowly. The eternal struggle of good vs evil, really. Like with Japanese workers, too.
Social media is helping a lot with this, forcing transparency and impacting buying decisions. Here's an example from this week: http://www.reuters.com/article/us-blackrock-climate-exclusive-idUSKBN16K0CR
Let us hope, anyway. Peace, Yui
