(130,156 posts)Restoring the Integrity of Our Democracy
**Remarks as presented to the Rappaport Center for Law and Public Policy, Boston College School of Law on January 24, 2017**
Not so many years ago, Robert F. Kennedy said:
Democracy is no easy form of government. Few nations have been able to sustain it. For it requires that we take the chances of freedom; that the liberating play of reason be brought to bear on events filled with passion; that dissent be allowed to make its appeal for acceptance; that men chance error in their search for the truth.
American democracy is a topic on which many incumbent politicians love to wax poetic.
We have all heard long sermons on the beauty of our democracy, the brilliance of our Constitution.

Our democracy is in trouble.
We have become bored with our politics.
So bored, in fact, that most of us would rather be entertained by it than read about it.
Wed sooner protest its shortcomings than take part in its healing.

The human institutions we have created over time to preserve, protect and defend our liberties.
The dignity of every individual person.

(454 posts)If a restaurant shuts down because it can't get enough customers, do we typically blame people for not wanting to eat there? If candidates can't get enough votes when and where it counts, its not the fault of people who didn't want to vote for them but a failure on the part of candidates who weren't able to connect with those people for whatever reasons.
I wish more understood that.

(130,156 posts)As I said, I think the worst part is:
10. Many people asked, bewilderedly, how did this happen? When I suggest it had a lot to do with the 35-year-long decline of incomes of the bottom 60 percent; the growing sense, ever since the Wall Street bailout, that the game is rigged; and the utter failure of both Republicans and Democrats to reverse these trends they gave me blank stares.
