http://www.myajc.com/news/breaking-news/trump-voters-south-georgia-come-terms-with-gop-health-plan/YGhaSvEz7yeZowZQZhYYLM/Kenneth Peek is among many Trump supporters in South Georgia coming to terms with the new GOP proposal, called the American Health Care Act, and learning they could be worse off.
Make no mistake, many people here still love Trump. They remain hopeful he will bring about reforms that reduce health care costs, open up competition and help rural areas like theirs.
Much of that support is driven by widespread disdain for Obamacare. Many see it as an entitlement that often benefits people not willing to pull their own weight.
Worse, they resent Obamacares mandate that people buy health insurance, seeing it as a directive at home in a repressive regime, not a democracy. Even some with Obamacare insurance have complained their premiums have grown by double-digits in recent years and deductibles are so high that their coverage is basically worthless.
Right now, Peek is paying $281 a month for his health policy through Obamacare. Thats $3,372 a year. Hes receiving $11,172 in government tax credits. (His wife, Debra, is on disability.)
Under the proposed new plan, his tax credit would shrink to about $4,000, a drop of $7,172 or 64 percent.
The tax credits are designed to help people who dont get coverage through an employer buy individual insurance. Both Obamacare and the GOP plan offer them but in very different ways.
The Obamacare credits are based on income, so people who make less benefit more. Under the GOP plan, people would receive credits based mostly on their age, not their income. So a 40-year-old making $30,000 and a person the same age making $50,000 would receive the same flat sum of $3,000.
Peek, for his part, is disappointed, and concerned he might not be able to afford health insurance.

Infotainment is going to bring down America. Thanks, Zucker and Moonves.

(7,430 posts)They see anything "Obama" as the reverse of white supremacy, with a black man at the top of the heap. It drives them crazy. But Stupid never dies. They'll likely blame Obama for big increases in health care insurance premiums AFTER it's repealed. But that's nothing new. Trumpy and the GOP propaganda machine has conditioned them to blame Obama for everything they don't like.

(10,437 posts)these same trump supporters are doing the same....to them an entitlement is something they "earn" because they are white and its a handout to everyone else who is not white.....when the govt checks and support ends, these trump people will be in shock...as they are white people and they are entitled to it...

(1,035 posts)Two comments here. First, this disdain for Obamacare is driven by the Republican mantra that all of your hard earned tax dollars are going to support lazy slobs. It's not just lazy slobs though. Dig deeper here and there would be comments about black and brown people. Second, as a white male this man is concerned that his government benefit under the CACA plan would drop 64 percent. Uh, if you need that much assistance to pay for your own healthcare, why the fuck are you looking down on anyone else?
