The following special elections will be held to replace Senators or Representatives who died, resigned, or were otherwise removed from office in the 115th U.S. Congress:
House of Representatives
California's 34th congressional district: Xavier Becerra resigned to become the Attorney General of California.[1] A special election will be held on April 4, 2017.
At least 16 candidates are running for this seat.
Kansas's 4th congressional district: Mike Pompeo resigned January 23, 2017, to become Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.[3] A special election will be held on April 11, 2017.
James Thompson wins democratic nomination
Georgia's 6th congressional district: Tom Price resigned February 10, 2017, to become the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services.[5] A special election will be held on April 18, 2017.
Five Republicans, two Democrats and one independent have registered with Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemps office to vie for District 6 representative.
South Carolina's 5th congressional district: Mick Mulvaney resigned February 16, 2017, to become the Director of the Office of Management and Budget. A special election will be held June 20, 2017.
Seven Republican candidates have already signaled their intentions to run; Democrats have been mum so far, although The State newspaper reports Sumter financial advisor Archie Parnell will announce his candidacy on Tuesday.
Montana's at-large congressional district: Ryan Zinke resigned March 1, 2017, to become the United States Secretary of the Interior.[7] A special election will be held on May 25.
Democrats from across Montana are converging in the capital Sunday to nominate a candidate to fill the state's only congressional seat, vacated by Republican Rep. Ryan Zinke to lead the U.S. Interior Department.
Between 150 and 180 delegates will choose a winner from at least eight candidates, including two legislators and several political newcomers.
Anyone working to help get a dem in these seats? Any possiblity of us gaining as a result of the Con pulling rethugs for the corrupt cabinet?

(86,502 posts)We have our candidate in Montana, went to his first rally a little over a week ago. I think he's got a good chance, the R opponent lost the governor's race to the incumbent Democrat in November. People are pretty fed up around here but I'm in a more purple-ish part of the state. Having just relocated, I made sure to re-register to make sure I can vote in this election. Quist has friends all over the state from being a traveling musician. I met him, briefly at the rally and offered to volunteer as a policy wonk. We have lots of public lands in the state and the residents are pretty serious about how it's managed, more so than in Idaho.
Election is on May 25, I think... I'll be voting.

(86,502 posts)If you've ever lived here and know about what our public lands mean to us, that's a big thing. they belong to all citizens of this country, not just those who live in the same state as the PL. These lands never belonged to the respective state where they are found, they were part of the federal US ever since they were stolen from the indigenous peoples.
Quist gets this and he is more welcomed by residents since he has been here all his life, grew up near a rez and gets that Indians are people and citizens too. He also is big on veterans' affairs and wants to get on the VA committee in the House when he gets there. We have a lot of undeserved vets in the state. One of the memes going around is that he's looking really good because he not a politician - even in a room full of Ds - but is well equipped to serve as our representative. What I saw upon first glance is a guy who wants to help protect our public lands, I see from his FB page someone linked to here (TY ), that he is talking about it a lot. He has all of the values that will be easy to bring Rs on board, especially as they wake up to the atrocity we now endure. Part of that would also be that he sees what's going on in DC and interested in correcting the errors being made by the current scoundrels in our halls of governance.

(5,624 posts)Greg Gianforte, whos vying for the Republican nomination to become Montanas next U.S. representative, reports that he has already raised $825,000 for an upcoming special election campaign to fill the seat.

(86,502 posts)The Democrat he's running against is a homeboy, so to speak, and Gianforte is not. In the eyes of some Montanans, you ain't a local/Montanan if you didn't arrive before you were ten, I've been here -in Montana-for well over a decade and I'm still considered relatively "new 'round here" even though I lived in Idaho longer before I moved here.
All that money is for naught out here, it's frowned upon in most cases. We even had election laws prohibiting Citizens United type campaign funding for almost hundred years until that dreadful decision. And we fought it too.
He might look favorable on the teevee but in the real world out on the ground, he doesn't look as favorable.
