Former Greenville Police Chief Hassan Aden said he was unreasonably detained, after allegedly being forced to sit in the U.S. Customs and Border Protection detention center for an hour and a half, which he detailed in a Facebook post earlier this evening.
My freedoms were restricted, and I cannot be sure it wont happen again, and that it wont happen to my family, my children, the next time we travel abroad, Aden said in the post.
Aden was returning from visiting his mother in Paris, when he arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport. He said this is something he has done numerous times since becoming a U.S. citizen, but this is the first time he has been detained by CBP. On all of my prior trips, I was greeted by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officers with a warm smile and the usual, Welcome home sir, he said.
Aden said the officer who stopped him asked if he was traveling alone and then proceeded to escort him to a back room. He told the officers numerous times of his past experience as a police chief, but they continued to hold him saying someone on the watch list was using his name as an alias.

(8,303 posts)When they have a potential hit, I suppose they have to go up the line and get an ID check. The fact that he is a citizen doesn't mean much in this circumstance.
I feel sorry for this man, but he's in as much danger as the rest of us from terrorism (and when he was active duty, more!), and any meaningful security will result in quite a bit of this sort of thing.
Aden Hassan or Hassan Aden is a name implicated in multiple relationships with Al-Shabaab in multiple countries.

(8,303 posts)He's someone who unfortunately has a rather common name, some holders of which are actively engaged in terrorism of an extremely dangerous kind.
Anybody with that name who is an adult is going to get heightened scrutiny coming back into the country, especially from Europe.

(4,750 posts)The travel ban (which shouldn't apply to Chief Aden in any case) has been stayed, yet American citizens, foreign academics, Canadian nurses and others are being pushed around at the borders on a regular basis.
Why do those in charge of CBP not lay out some rules about proper treatment of people entering the country? Who, (besides Chump), is emboldening these clowns, or is, at least, turning a blind eye to this behavior?
