I've always liked him. He knows how to make his point without being offensive or grating. His sincerity and warmth and (of course) his sense of humor helps to put people at ease. Al Franken is a treasure and we're very fortunate to have him as a loyal Democrat.

But in Al Frankens suite of offices in the Hart Senate Office Building, the man still known best as one of the early stars of Saturday Night Live was going through an intense rehearsal with four aides.
How much, Franken wanted to know, are the Chinese spending on clean technology research? Where do things stand on the University of Minnesotas study of torrefaction, a roasting process that produces better fuel for biomass energy production? And might there be a chance to ask a question about one of his favorite causes, loan guarantees for Native American reservations?
I just want to keep bringing it up, so they keep hearing it, Franken said, with a trace of a sigh.

(42,862 posts)I'm of the opinion that people who constantly have that aggressive demeanor are doing themselves NO favors. The "my-way-or-the-highway" type of politicians are compensating for intellectual weakness or for a lack of respect and stature.
Whether it's a lack of self-respect or a lack of respect from their colleagues... it's hard to tell. But it's easy to see that Franken is a well-respected Senator who doesn't need to rely on such (less than subtle, and totally ineffective) performance gimmicks.
Obviously, Franken is a loyal Democrat, but he also knows that if anything is to get done... if we're going to move forward, we have to find common ground and be willing to compromise while still remaining true to our values. It pleases me very much that he keeps his head on his shoulders and pursues realistic goals.
Our party, the Democrats, can use more like him.

(42,862 posts)... with Senator Franken, it's NEVER about his own interests. He's not trying to feather his nest or use a national tragedy to seek campaign donations. (It sickens me when I see the some other party's members do that.)
He always remains focused on what's best for our country... for our people... for our security... and ultimately, what benefits the world. He's not obsessively focused on just one or two "pet-issues" like we've seen in the past.

(42,862 posts)... in his work, but he's not vain. There's a lot to be said for someone who gets their satisfaction in life by simply doing his best and in making OTHER people's lives better. He's not one of those Senators who's interested primarily in making his/her personal life better, and he's not one of those who thinks it's okay to do fundraising on the backs of other people's misery and misfortune.
He's a LOYAL DEMOCRAT who's wise enough to know who the real "enemy" is. I love his acerbic opposition to Trump AND THE REPUBLICANS.
He's not a "finger-pointer" who's always looking to blame others. He looks for SOLUTIONS, not scapegoats! He's not a braggart and he's not shy about finding common ground. He sees little value in "standing his ground" if we're unable to advance at all.
He's got that Obama philosophy that compromise is possible without having to surrender our core beliefs and values.

(42,862 posts)... they may improve their OWN lives, and real-estate holdings, and bank accounts. They may make headlines and Sunday talk shows, but when it comes right down to it, what a Senator ACCOMPLISHES is much more important than the number of words spoken on the Senate floor, or on TV.
Al Franken is one of the good ones and our party would be better off if more Democratic Senators adopted Franken's style and demeanor and work ethic. Minnesota has a lot to be proud of.

(58,785 posts)my parents for that. As you can see, there's a strong element of moral indignation behind this interest, and indignation is well and good in doses, but I noticed fairly early in life that some people live to find stuff to be indignant about. And it's pretty unattractive. That's why I decided to become a wiseass. ― Al Franken
Of course, these days the senator sadly finds himself obliged to bury his wiseass side. Love to be a fly on his dining room wall.
