Trump's net worth dwindled to $3.5 billion, Forbes says

By Barbara Goldberg | NEW YORK

While Donald Trump's political fortunes were rising, his net worth was dropping to a mere $3.5 billion, or roughly a third of what he claimed during his successful campaign for the U.S. presidency, according to the latest Forbes list of the world's billionaires.

Trump tumbled more than 100 spots to No. 544 on the magazine's 31st annual list, largely because of the impact of the slumping New York real estate market on his holdings.

"Midtown Manhattan real estate is down; therefore, so is Donald Trump's fortune," the business magazine said in a statement.

The developer-turned-politician, who ranked No. 205 last year, fell further behind to Bill Gates, the list's perennial leader.

The problem with that is, if the furnace at Trump Tower went out he'd have to call the Russians for more money. This is why Trump doesn't want anyone to see his recent tax returns - a Deplorable who lives paycheck-to-paycheck might not understand why his hero only had $100,000 in taxable income last year.

These Forbes lists are, of course, mostly speculative, and indeed are subject to wild corrections and fluctuations.

Queen Elizabeth II, for example, for years appeared near the top of the yearly lists with close to $30 billion in net worth (and this was over 20 years ag); but had it abruptly "revised" down to around $750 million after her office had a chat with Forbes around the time of the fracas over Diana's funeral.

In Trump's case we do know from a Deutsche Bank loan application he himself filed that a net worth of some $830 million was officially declared.

That was a few years ago; but probably much closer to the real total.
