I see a lot of talk about how terribly incompetent, how crude, crass and unfit for office Trump is. All of which is true, the man is a crude pig. A criminal. I don't see a lot of talk though about the destruction all of this does to the position itself. I have no illusions that past presidents were all great people. Nixon is a famous example. The Nixon tapes subsequently released show that he was a strong antisemite as well as a criminal. Reagan did untold damage to government, in many ways the GOP has taken up Reagan's baton and run with it further. But there's no mistaking that Trump sets a new low watermark in terms of public image. Which sets a precedent that future leaders can follow. What damage do you think Trump's regime will have done to the office itself? Assuming we get out of all this alive.

(17,276 posts)the people elected Jimmy Carter, an outsider to Washington politics. That kind of acted as a "reset" to restore the sense of what had been lost, I think.
Maybe something like that will happen again. Not looking for an outsider, just someone safe and uncorrupted.

(1,129 posts)Obama, IMHO, raised the bar substantially beyond the "average expectation" of presidential behavior....
45 has pretty much eliminated the bar altogether....
If / when there is a 46.... 47... 48
we should experience a return to "average" (pre-obama) for both the behaviors actually demonstrated by a Potus & the expectations held worldwide.
