Today, Republican efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act went down, and they went down in flames. Pay no attention to Paul Ryan’s often repeated claims that they were very close, but just couldn’t get those last few votes. That was just a BS attempt to put their failure in the best possible light.....

1. they were something like 35 votes short

and it was getting wider as Koch money was flowing in to kill it.

thats 16 % light... not the "few votes" they would have you believe.

You're absolutely right -bad as it was to fail at passing Trump's signature legislation, I think it would have been worse for the Republicans to be associated forever with that disaster of a bill though I don't believe that they would have ever reached a compromise with the Senate even if the House had passed it. Looking back this was a non-starter from the beginning.

Now they will probably try to tackle the budget where I think they will need Democrats in the Senate to pass anything. That ought to be verrrrry interesting.
