Timothy Snyder--Most important guest Bill Maher has hosted ever

His most recent book, On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons From the Twentith Century, is a must read.
He lays out the threat we are facing and offers a road map to avoid mistakes of the past.
Last night on Real Time with Bill Maher, in spite of Bill's rude interruptions, he managed to let viewers know what his new book is about and how important the information is at this point in history.
Get the book, read it, pass it along.

1. Words to follow:

“Don’t obey in advance,” .... “don’t follow what everyone else is doing… figure out what you stand for and be yourself.”

... Americans must defend institutions. Many anticipate that “the institution will save us” but Snyder said that this kind of thinking is wrong. “We have to save the institutions. They don’t do it on their own. This is the moment of ‘ask not what the institutions can do for you. Ask what you can do for the institutions.'”

... believe in the truth. “Without truth, we don’t have trust. Without trust, we don’t have the rule of law. Without the rule of law, we don’t have democracy...."

I watched the show and I think those were some of the most important points made in a while.

2. Don't doubt you are right, but the guy's delivery was awful. He needs to work on a shorter version

of his message if he is going to appear on shows like Maher. It was a good show last night.

3. My impression was that Bill interupted his message and made his delivery awkward

Bill just never listens to what his guest have to say, he is too anxious to make his own inane points.
It would be better to see Snyder on show format, like Joys Reids' show, where an adult discussion could take place.

6. Bill has so many republicans on his show, he is just wired that way, maybe just a bit too quick

to jump in and set the record straight, but with most of his guests, it is necessary!

5. He had the guy on, but the guy was too slow and detailed in his message. There wasn't time for that.

I agree Maher is not the best place for him, certainly not a few minute segment.

I thought Bill was agreeing with everything he said.

To quote my dh, "Nationalism is an ugly and dangerous thing."
