Authentic populist vs. bulls**t artist: Why Bernie Sanders is so popular and Donald Trump isnt

He couldn't win the Democratic nomination, but Sanders has emerged as the authentic voice of populist resistance
More than four months after Donald Trump lost the popular vote by 3 million, yet managed to win the election as a result of the archaic and undemocratic Electoral College, one thing has remained predictable in this highly unpredictable age of Trump: the presidents unprecedented unpopularity. According to Gallup, the most reputable polling company in the country, Trumps approval rating has remained in the negatives throughout his first two months in office, and last weekend it dropped to a new low of 37 percent (with 58 percent of Americans disapproving).
President Trump is well on his way to becoming the most disliked president in modern history and in record time too. By comparison, historically unpopular presidents Richard Nixon and George W. Bush didnt see their ratings fall this low until their second terms, and only after Watergate and the Iraq War came to haunt their respective presidencies.
In addition to Trumps abysmal approval ratings, public polling has revealed another constant in this populist era of ours: the steadfast popularity of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. According to a Fox News poll released last week, the majority of Americans continue to have a favorable opinion of the self-described democratic socialist, who has a net favorability rating of 29 (61 percent favorable, 32 unfavorable), along with an even higher net favorable rating of 41 among independents. Since becoming a nationally recognized figure during his presidential campaign last year, Sanders has only grown in popularity, and the senator is now one of the strongest critics of Trump and his reactionary agenda.

The people know who's fighting for them. Go get 'em, Bernie!

(57,349 posts)Bernie credited the people with our victory yesterday, he knows we have the power to resist and to win. Women, minorities, workers - we're the resistance.
We need more town halls and rallies - it's obvious that people respond when our leaders speak directly to them. Republicans all over the country have been raked over the coals for cowering in their offices instead of facing their constituents who were angry about their efforts to repeal the ACA.
So why not take advantage of that residual anger and hold town halls in red/purple areas where we can pick up votes? Why cede the spotlight to the Republicans? Remind voters that we're the ones who fight for their rights while the other guys spend their time in congress trying to take them away.
This kind of outreach is why Bernie is so popular and that's why Dem leaders made him Chair of the Outreach - because they see it too.

(8,088 posts)that sort of appeal? Gotta wonder if they really are friends of the Democratic Party!

(8,088 posts)"shut up and join the party * crew. Not sure why they'd squander Bernie's tremendous appeal, especially when unaffiliated registrations are outpacing those of either major party. Doesn't seem like good strategy...

(10,129 posts)I got myself a male Jacksons Chameleon back in October, (after literally months of research/planning - their care is pretty detailed), and now I'm smitten. I want a room full of them. This isn't a picture of my little D'Argo, but he looks exactly like this:
Mrs. Opie rescued a bearded dragon from a friend a year and a half ago, and we just kind of flipped from "dog-people" to "scaly-baby people" lol.

(10,129 posts)I'm not a big fan of bugs, though lol. (However, since the scalies require lots and lots of crickets, worms and roaches, I've gotten a bit more acclimated to them haha)

We would be arachnid chow.

(32,351 posts)Why is Fox News building up the reputation of Bernie Sanders?
I believe they must have an angle or they wouldn't be doing this. It seems to me that Fox News is hoping Bernie will be the next candidate for Trump to run against in 2020. They'd much rather have Bernie as an opponent than Hillary (again) for obvious reasons.
Seems like this is a setup.
I have all the admiration for Bernie Sanders. The man has brass balls and no fucks to give.
BUT- he doesn't represent the Democratic Party, and he's not even a member.
Fox News doesn't seem to know or care about this.
