He was playing at being Merv GRIFFIN, hosting a "bi-partisan" music event for ALL senators and their wives. He sounded pathetically grateful to have performers agreeing to play for him. Oh, and he said that nobody had told him before that politics was SO MUCH FUN!1

The maître d' slam was by Sally QUINN a few weeks ago, commenting on why he likes to be at maralago being the host to rich cockroaches: "He likes the maître d' role."
