(94,502 posts)I don't suport the tax plan, but I'm also not a fan of silly polls designed to generate a reflexive answer.

(99,710 posts)It's a tax on importers which will be passed on to consumers. Since the less money you make the more of it you spend its impact will be felt by the least of us. The Republicans will use the money it raises to finance a tax cut for the one percent.
Why would you denigrate members of our community by suggesting they lack the perspicacity to know what a border adjustment tax is?
On behalf of them I am profoundly disappointed.

(505 posts)I think I know what the idea of that border adjustment tax is.
Also, I think a focus on producing things closer to where you live is not that bad, and it's probably good for jobs for less skilled workers. At the same time, global trade is not always a bad idea. Not sure where the reasonable middle ground is.
The problem with this tax plan is that I guess it means food, clothing and generally lots of the things that everyone needs will be more expensive, either because they're imported & hevily taxed, or because it's more expensive to produce them in the US. This is hopefully offset somewhat by people having better jobs -> more money.
I'm not that sure what to think about all of this. I know my country profits a lot from exporting expensive stuff (I'm German), but I also know that's not sustainable because it basically kills other countries / their economies. I don't want my country to kill other countries, so hopefully they find a solution for that issue. Sadly, Merkel and other CDU party politicians are happy the way it is even though it hurts Europe.

(99,710 posts)Embodied in his assertion that my question was flawed was the suggestion that members of this board lack the perspicacity to know what a BAT is and what it does.
The BAT is a sales tax in drag. Sales taxes are the most regressive taxes since it taxes spending and the less money you make the more of it you spend. That is why food and medicine is exempt from sales taxes in most states. I can't speak to European value added taxes but in America border adjustment taxes are a mostly Republican idea.
