He's the leader of the Senate Intel Committee.

Malcolm X had a system where he rated people on a scale of 1 to 100, on how much he trusted them. I find this system helpful. Thus, while I do not trust Burr, in the context of the Senate intelligence committee, I think the Democrats will be able to exert influence on him.

(10,299 posts)Say what you want about Howard Coble... He represented his constituents well, and went to bat for them with government agencies no matter their political persuasion. Burr was districted into my area at one point, wrote to him about an immigration issue. My wife, from a different address, did write to Coble about the same immigration issue (Coble served that address). I'm thinking because I was the immigrant in Burrs district but my wife was the petitioner and in Coble's district that it's Coble's job.
If pushed hard enough, Burr will stand up and do the right thing. But he's been too tea-party polluted.

(11,269 posts)McCain and Graham might stiffen his resolve. He seemed sincere at the presser today, if he's lying he's much better at it than Trump. Which is not a good thing.

(2,434 posts)This is actually the first time this man has had a chance in the limelight in his 2 decades in Congress. He's been having a grafter kind of time up until now because no one noticed him. I suspect he'll mind his p's and q's since he knows we are now watching and he wants to keep his job in this purple state.

(11,243 posts)Maybe they are trying to 'look busy' on the Russia investigation while they ram Gorsuch through the Senate. My guess, the SC pick is the real prize in the game.

(11,243 posts)He called reporters 'off the record' (aka leaking to the media) and tried convince them there was nothing to this crazy Trump Russia story they were all writing about. I don't trust him after that. He already tried to kill the story at Trump's behest. From WaPo....
More about his ties to Trump. He was a BIG fan.....
Burr is completely useless to his constituents. He votes with Trump 100% of the time, despite being from a purple state. He is bought and paid for by special interest. I trust him as far as I can throw him.

(28,795 posts)those are great links! love the one about his voting record, especially. what a surprise, hey?

(11,243 posts)Talks nice, but votes with Trump 100% of the time. Just a put nice suit on old school white supremacy and you have Richard Burr. He has never done a single thing I admire, and I do admire some Republicans, even if I disagree with them. In some ways, Jesse Helms was a better Senator. He was so wrong about everything, but he had amazing constituent services. He really worked the personal relationship part of politics. But not Burr. He doesn't care about his constituents at all, never has.

(11,243 posts)I don't trust him at all. He is my Senator and has never done a single thing I admired in the past. Maybe he will exceed my expectations. I doubt it. But we will know soon.

(423 posts)I'm not gonna make any judgments about him yet. Warner vouching for him, and his knowledge of the subject matter at the press conference today were enough for earn that.

(p.s. nearby, McCain has on CNBC, not Fox. That explains a lot)

(19,558 posts)The decision to involve those officials could be perceived as threatening the independence of U.S. spy agencies that are supposed to remain insulated from partisan issues, as well as undercutting the credibility of ongoing congressional probes. Those officials saw their involvement as an attempt to correct coverage they believed to be erroneous.
The effort also involved senior lawmakers with access to classified intelligence about Russia, including Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), the chairmen of the Senate and House intelligence committees. A spokesman for Nunes said that he had already begun speaking to reporters to challenge the story and that, at the request of a White House communications aide, Chairman Nunes then spoke to an additional reporter and delivered the same message.
Unlike the others, Nunes spoke on the record and was subsequently quoted in the Wall Street Journal.

I think we're in uncharted waters here. There's not one ethical Republican we can turn to to actually act on this.

(6,324 posts)If he thinks the winds will blow in a way where doing the right thing is best for him, he will. If Trump has dirt on him or makes him and offer where covering is best for him, that is what he will do.

(25,487 posts)a) he us not up for re election until 2022. he doesn't have to worry about being primaried from the right. There will be another Presidential election before he has to face the voters again.
b) North Carolina is an increasingly Democratic state. Burr only won 51-45 last year.
c) He has hinted he might not run again in 2022. He can actually put country ahead of party.
d) even though I disagree with him on 90% of issues, he IS a patriot. He won't ignore Russian meddling.
Look for the hard right to start coming after him hard.... because I actually think he is going to be the Republican "hero" this nation is starving for.
