White House press secretary Sean Spicer had the special task Mondayeven by Trump-era standardsof trying to cover for a witless leader who in the last several days has cozied up to brutal foreign leaders (plural!), weighed the upsides of a gas tax, and walked out of an interview that was frankly just a little too reality-based for him. Heres just a glimpse of Spicey trying to walk back Trumps deluge of doozies.

Good god, what is Spicer talking about? Kim Jong Un leads the country Trump tagged just last week as being on a collision course with the U.S. for a major, major conflict. Now Spiceys tapping Un as a forward mover? Yep! (BTW, if youre wondering about Trump extending a White House invite to murderous Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte, Spicer confirmed that Trump was fully briefed on his abysmal human rights record.) Next?

In other words, he doesnt want to offend a special interest group, but hes fine with alienating all those everyday voters out there who dont have the agency to gain an audience with him like a special interest group did. Now theres some political spin you probably didnt think ofand thats why youre not Trumps press secretary.
And then Spicer revisited Trumps 100-day capstone interview with CBSs John Dickerson, in which Dickerson asked Trump just a few too many questions about his baseless charge that President Obama wiretapped his phones and was a bad or sick guy.
You stand by that claim about him? the nettlesome Dickerson asked, to which Trump retorted, I dont stand by anything.

(5,810 posts)Given his track record for flipping on a variety of subjects, it's NO SURPRISE to hear he doesn't stand by anything.

(10,269 posts)He needs to be able to put on paper that he worked as a high level govt executive so he can go get that cush job as exxons president of public relations. If he can bullshit his way through the first 6 months of Trumps presidency, he can surely handle things when the transpacific pipeline blows a leak later...
Don't kid yourself he isn't a true believer, just self-serving and greedy.
