Time magazine's Phil Elliott tweeted a quick summary of the quote.

The point: Elliott's tweet fed a quick, afternoon round of mockery for Clinton, who as ever had been out of touch. But anyone who's covered politics certainly, anyone who's done a reporting trip to rural West Virginia or Iowa or New Hampshire could recognize what Clinton was talking about. She campaigned on a quarter-trillion-dollar infrastructure plan, which, in the unappealing campaign-speak of her news release, included giving all American households access to world-class broadband and creating connected smart cities with infrastructure thats part of tomorrows Internet of Things.
But narrative can overwhelm that. And the firmly established narrative of Clinton and Trump is that she couldn't connect to rural voters, whereas he was a blue-collar billionaire who made surprising emotional connections. Trump may be the first president whose plunge to 40 percent approval was marked by stories about the voters who still loved him. And Clinton may be the only politician who can talk about the need for rural broadband at this point, an almost banal priority of rural politicians and be accused of snobbery.
Paraphrasing Obama, "If she walked on water, these guys would accuse her of being too elitist/out of touch/corrupt to learn to swim, like everyone else has to."

"Nevertheless, she persisted."
And in a democracy, Hillary Clinton would be our president today.

(16,104 posts)the day the "Access Hollywood' tape came out in his own words confirming his deplorable character and remarkable unfitness to be in the White House, the Russian WikiLeaks were released with others talking about Hillary.
The media only passed along what Trump himself said - it just happened to be "negative" in the eyes of some Americans, apparently.
The media took the stolen private emails and made it a negative issue attacking Hillary and her campaign.
The record shows the media coverage of Hillary was far more negative than for Trump.
Does the coverage matter? It's what Trump whines about everyday now!

(6,916 posts)And I agree the media brought her down. Including the NYT. Charles Pierce is right on about how the NYT has a Clinton problem. Maggie Haberman and her colleagues are probably the most important reasons she lost outside of purchased GOP-donor operatives like Chaffetz and Giuliani.
HOWEVER, we have to lay a little blame at Hillary's feet for her media relations. Today, you need to engage the media. You need a social media fast response team. You need to reach out with cell phone videos and direct talk. Hillary didn't do those things. (And this is not news - media around her campaign and top campaign officials all know this. I was told that campaign knew this, but ultimately the candidate makes these decisions not to engage the media.)

(32,640 posts)was absolutely on spot.
I'm not seeing where anyone has stated that, or discussed her response time.
So much of what we saw during the election from the media was exactly what we saw in the twitter responses above - reframing it in the "Corrupt/lying/elitist/out of touch/ Clinton" narrative. I'm not sure how she was supposed to prevent something like that with a "quick media response." Especially since a single deranged tweet from DT, or specifically timed and curated Wikileak release would take all of the attention.
But I'll say that the twitter "delete your account" was indeed good.

(6,916 posts)HRC ran a poor media operation. Reporters hated her in part because they're just people that want to write stories and get home to their kids, and she made their jobs harder by being secretive. While 45 was dropping quotable quotes everywhere.
And the democratic media types largely agree with this:
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/14/opinion/campaign-stops/donald-trump-trolled-us-all-we-should-learn-from-it.html
And I hate hate hate the way the media treated her. But a fraction - say 20% - of the blame about her media coverage falls to her.

(6,916 posts)Your points 2-6 are true.
But HRC WAS (sadly) uncommunicative with the press and had a poor social media operation. In modern politics nothing is more important than media relations.
As for 2-6 above, most of those have been created by a ton of right wing (super wealthy GOP donor) money, e.g. J Watch (the Clinton decades old smear organization), and amplified by media members from Safire to Haberman, and by the infotainment for-profit media like CNN.

(32,640 posts)The Posts Dave Weigel took apart the erroneous snap assessment of her comments on high-speed broadband. So, after having watched her 35-minute interview with CNN chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour and having read the transcript, Im going to dive into this maddening business that Clinton refuses to take responsibility for her loss. My snap take: Dammit, people!

(6,916 posts)Hillary was bad at media relations
AND
The media treated her unbelievably poorly.
Check out the NYT op-ed I posted. And for a view on how the media effectively caused Hillary's loss, I like Charlie Pierce's piece on the NYT's "Clinton Problem".

(41,915 posts)I saw a woman accepting responsibility for her failures and answering questions that were asked. She also agrees with just about everyone except for the new guy's followers that Putin and Comey affected the outcome. But is she allowed to say that? Not without it being pulled out of context and distorted to fit the most argument-provoking narrative they can find. And here we are, pissed but tuning in. It's compelling and infuriating.

(9,260 posts)regurgitation of why HRC lost or why Bernie might have done better or why this or why that? I love history, but if we are going to save this country from the conservative horde we better get our collective asses in gear and move forward.

(90,202 posts)...Putin hates Hillary in a very personal manner? (Which, in answer to a direct question, Hillary answered in a thoughtful and level way.)
You say you "love history, but" -- are you aware of the truth that those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it? And are you aware that Putin had interfered in European elections with money and cyber warfare three times before he got to us, that he had a hand in Brexit, and that he is now working on the French election?
Knowing all that, should we allow the media and Trumpistas to continue to mock Hillary for telling the truth, which is that among the multiple factors that led to her loss was the interference of Putin and of Comey? Or should we go along with their narrative, let them call her a sore loser who should stfu, and in effect make ourselves complicit in the coverup?
jmho, btw

(3,270 posts)If Hillary had been in California giving a speech at 10:00am and said, "Good morning California!"
Trump surrogates would have come back with, "She's so out of touch, how could she be so wrong? It was afternoon in New York!"
And the media would spend a week saying, "Well, they're not wrong."

(90,202 posts)Where I saw an incredibly strong woman holding her head high, a powerful intellect assessing ALL the factors that led to her defeat, a woman with great heart still beating -- they portrayed a loser whining about her loss and blaming others for it.
Where I saw the courage in saying "I will return to being a citizen activist... And a part of the Resistance," I honestly do not know what they saw.
I'm only glad I tuned in and saw the interview for myself, all the way through, and saw the truth instead of being fed the Big Lie.
