Pete Souza: The Sultan of Shade

Pete Souza via his Instagram account has an exquisite sense of matching the present with the recent past. Three new entries.

May 5, 2017

President Obama recognizes Natoma Canfield during a ceremony in 2013. Natoma had written him a letter in 2009 urging him to fight for health care reform. Natoma had been forced to drop her health care insurance after her premiums were jacked up in price when she had been diagnosed with cancer. She thought because of her medical bills, she would lose her house. "I carried Natoma's story with me every day of the fight to pass this law," President Obama said at the time. After the ACA was passed in 2010, Natoma was able to afford health insurance again. That was a good reason to celebrate.

Perhaps he included this photo because he liked the brighter colored suits...

Reading Natoma Canfield's letter (see previous post) during a meeting with health insurance executives in early 2010.

An interview in the Oval Office broadcast on the evening of May 1, 2017 may have brought to mind a quiet evening there exactly six years earlier, when he took photos of PBO and VPJB in the adjoining private office.

Six years ago tonight. Sunday, May 1, 2011. This was the 841st frame I made that day. I had taken the "Situation Room photo" some seven hours earlier. It was now after 11:00p.m. The President was making some final edits to his remarks to tell the nation that Osama bin Laden had been killed. As news began to leak on television, I changed my point of focus when I saw a video of bin Laden on the TV in the Outer Oval Office.

Don't get me wrong, I literally woke up every day between January 20, 2009 and January 19, 2017 grateful that Barack Obama was our president.

I never imagined how freaking BAD it could be.

That was also the same weekend that PBO hurt Trumpee's wee feelings at the Washington correspondence dinner.

He was Reagan's photographer too: the pictures that he took of him and his wife are particularly good. To wit (He also captured MJ's reaction pretty well lol.)
