(25,460 posts)I'm in the middle of reading Emile Zola's "The Belly of Paris." And now I have the perfect excuse to go to Uniqlo today and buy the Ines de la Fressange espadrilles and maybe also her denim jumper dress I've had my eye on.

(4,377 posts)But the way the last year has gone it was impossible to relax until the final results came in. I'm loving how pissed off Trump and the Brexit people are right now, their tears are delicious.

(4,377 posts)Her father was an open anti-semite and holocaust denier, whereas Marine made a big effort to try and sweep her fascist tendencies under the carpet. I just hope to hell that Macron does a good job, so NF can be put back in the vile little corner where they belong.
I read a lot of stuff that said that Marine was trying to make the FN more "respectable". Had the sense that she is a more skilled politician than her father. Hopefully this larger share of the vote was a one time thing.

(49,212 posts)I guess I missed the part where there were more than five french people on this website?
Seriously, taking credit for other people's successes is tacky. Be glad for them. Be glad for everybody who would have been effected had the fascist won. But give the credit where it's due.

(12,894 posts)"we," in the US (who are struggling to deal with this horrific administration) are not only united here, but globally when there is so much at stake regarding ALL of our lives.
No doubt France did this without our help. Yet, seeing first hand how a Russian placed president would make their lives, "oh, so great", (Right. )
was a big motivator too.

(99,710 posts)By suffering under the yoke of Trump we are showing the world what it's like to live under authoritarianism. Our negative example shapes the world.

And my dad was a Golden Gloves boxer, a lifeguard, and had lettered in baseball when Uncle Sam Called him to fight the Axis in WW ll. He was hit by shrapnel and contacted malaria in the Battle Of North Africa. He had six surgeries at Walter Reed Hospital and was there for six months. They could save the eye cosmetically but he never regained sight in it. I still carry his wallet sized discharge with me. It said his health upon discharge was poor. He couldn't do the things with me other dads do. I was 14 when he died at the ripe old age of 58 putting up street signs in the October Florida sun. Like my uncle who lived to be 94 said "he was never right after the war."
I think I have skin in this game. I think we all do.

(12,894 posts)also fought in WWII and was in Europe. My mother was a nurse in the Army, stationed in the Philippines. It would be years later that I would be able to understand exactly what they went through, because they never talked about when I was growing up. I think it is our duty to carry their legacy by continuing to fight for our democracy. While it is rough now, I can't imagine how it must have felt to sacrifice so much at such a young age, as the WWII generation did.
