Washington (CNN)There are two reasons why President Donald Trump fired James Comey, according to a source close to the now-former FBI director:
1. Comey never provided the President with any assurance of personal loyalty.
2. The fact that the FBI's investigation into possible Trump team collusion with Russia in the 2016 election was not only not going anywhere -- the investigation was accelerating.
The official White House version of what happened is that deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, fresh on the job, wrote a memo expressing concern about the way Comey had handled the Hillary Clinton email investigation.
But mounting evidence suggests Comey was actually fired because of the Russian investigation.

(51,129 posts)A senior law-enforcement official dismisses the White House excuse for firing the FBI director, says Comey was inching closer to Trump.
The things that got Trump elected being Comeys handling of the Hillary Clinton email case. The other things being the Russian interference in the election.
........... Meanwhile, an official who was at FBI headquarters on Tuesday tried to joke off the late afternoon shock, asking: Does the president have the power to fire the FBI director?
He answered: President Putin can fire anybody. If Putin can put Trump in the White House, he can get rid of the FBI director.

(5,730 posts)For this investigation going forward. Now, Turtle will be the heavy again on getting confirmation, and setting up who has the calls in the investigation.
Comey will go down in history as throwing the election to DT, his legacy, not the honorable man he sees himself as.

(51,129 posts)On May 3, Comey gave an unclassified debriefing to the House Comm., informing Trump loyalists of the status of the investigation. Immediately thereafter the White Houdse started searching for the best excuse to fire him. Comey also sought more funding and more agents for the investigation.
In light of the fact that Trump is a target of the criminal investigation, this rises to conspiracy to obstruct justice, an impeachable offense:
Truth-suppressing acts by co-conspirators Sessions, Flynn, Kushner create liable for Conspiracy to Obstruct Justice. 18 U.S.C. §§ 1621 to 1623 -- Given perjury, subornation of perjury, false declarations, the assertion of a false affirmative statement by an individual testifying under oath accompanied by other obstructive, evasive testimony, such as a false denial of knowledge or memory, an offense may exist. 18 U.S.C. §§ 371 and 372--conspiracies to commit any offense against the United States, or to prevent or retaliate in response to the lawful discharge of the duties of Federal officers ...
18 U.S. Code § 1505 - Obstruction of proceedings before departments, agencies, and committees
..... Whoever corruptly, or by threats or force, or by any threatening letter or communication influences, obstructs, or impedes or endeavors to influence, obstruct, or impede the due and proper administration of the law under which any pending proceeding is being had before any department or agency of the United States, or the due and proper exercise of the power of inquiry under which any inquiry or investigation is being had by either House, or any committee of either House or any joint committee of the Congress
Shall be fined under this title, imprisoned not more than 5 years or, if the offense involves international or domestic terrorism (as defined in section 2331), imprisoned not more than 8 years, or both.

(26,280 posts)be speeding up does not mean that Trump or anyone higher up in his administration were about to be charged so to dismiss Comey now for that reason is a mistake as now it makes them look guilty and trying to coverup something.

(28,787 posts)and have been lamely trying to cover up since day 1. drip, drip, drip...flood. treason. impeachment, possibly prosecution. Rachel Maddow gave some terrific historical perspective on this yesterday. Nixon and the Saturday Night Massacre. Now, Nixon may have been going down regardless. But his actions when he fired the special prosecutor turned a lot of republicans against him because it telegraphed his guilt. same way here.
cstanleytech
(26,280 posts)but are within the government (like say certain members of Congress) but are providing advice to Trump and to his advisers and they were afraid that an investigation even one controlled by a lackey might inadvertently uncover something criminal that they were involved in thus Comey had to go atleast in order to provide a distraction while they bury the evidence better or try to.
barbtries
(28,787 posts)firing Comey isn't going to bury it all.

(28,787 posts)who doesn't know this is the reason? we have a fucking traitorous, mentally ill, personality disordered president. we can only hope that there are enough republicans in the senate with a conscience and some sense of history to follow this through.
i called Senator Burr today and thanked him for apparently taking the investigation seriously, urged him to move forward quickly, demanded a special prosecutor and mentioned that hopefully his fealty to party would not trump his loyalty to his country. all in a voice mail, maybe the message will get through.
it's a chore and i get tired but i really must continue to do this on a daily basis, and i think we all should. People Power shift into high gear.

Watergate was domestic, this issue is between 2 superpowers as well as domestic
If we all turn our attention to Congress non-stop maybe it will be enough to tip the
balance of a significant few members to remember who pays the bills of our government:
the taxpayers! The source of all value is the labor taxpayers put into resources: work.
