Religious Right activist and former Colorado state legislator Gordon Klingenschmitt said on a recent episode of his “Pray In Jesus Name” program that Democratic leaders are declaring that “if you don’t serve the devil, you can’t be a good Democrat.”

Klingenschmitt was reacting to recent comments from Sen. Dick Durbin and DNC chairman Tom Perez asserting that Democrats should support Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to make her own reproductive health choices, which he interpreted as meaning that people must agree to be ruled by demons in order to be Democrats.

“If the Bible says that something is sin,” Klingenschmitt said, “and it’s a sin to commit acts of murder against innocent children, then you can tell who the demonic spirits … are influencing when you see people like Tom Perez and Dick Durbin saying, ‘Not only shall we kill innocent children as a matter of policy, citing Roe v. Wade, not only shall we use American taxpayer dollars to pay for the shedding of innocent blood but, if you’re not demonic like we are, you can’t be a Democrat like we are.'”

“They’re claiming that every Democrat in America must be demon-possessed, as they are, in order to be faithful to the views of their party,” he said. “If you don’t serve the devil, you can’t be a good Democrat. I’m paraphrasing, but that is what they are saying, isn’t it?”

Klingenschmitt closed out the segment by praying that God will bless Democrats “with repentance so that the devil, our true enemy, would come out of them and they would be converted and saved and forgiven of their heinous sins.”

“We pray for the redemption of the Democrat party,” he added. “We pray that every Democrat in America will repent of evil-doing and child-murder and come to faith in Jesus Christ.”

8. Dear Mr. Klingenschmitt

I'd gladly cede every woman's right to health care if we did a far better job of taking care of the people who are already here. As it is, bringing an unwanted child into this world of oppression, deprivation, hunger and human-generated cruelty is a much worse sin than birth control or abortion.

Why isn't your party, which controls all three branches of the federal government, doing a better job of taking care of America's citizens? Why is there so much hunger, homelessness, and incarceration in direct opposition to Jesus' words? Where is your condemnation of government authorities who satisfy their own needs to wasteful excess while neglecting their constituents? Isaiah, Jeremiah, Amos, Micah, Jesus, Paul and John all had some pretty hard things to say about such naked, self-serving corruption by the governing powers, far in excess of anything you can gin up about abortion (which isn't directly mentioned at all in the Bible). Why are you failing in your duty as a watchman, against the wise prophetic word of Ezekiel? Wouldn't it be better for you to tie a millstone around your neck and throw yourself into the ocean? Jesus certainly thought so.
