... Trump warned ousted .. Comey on Friday against talking to the media, suggesting there might be tapes of conversations between the two men that could contradict his account.
"James Comey better hope that there are no 'tapes' of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" Trump said in .. Twitter posts.
... the New York Times reported that the president asked Comey in January to pledge loyalty to him ...
On Twitter, Trump appeared to suggest that if Comey gave his version of contacts between them, the administration might produce tapes of conversations, although it was not clear if such tapes exist ...

(115,601 posts)On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out he did record the conversation. Presidents have used recording devices in the White House since FDR; what was different about the Nixon tapes is that for the first time they were voice-activated and therefore automatically recorded everything that was said in the Oval Office. Other presidents have used recording devices but activated them manually when they wanted to record a particular conversation for the sake of accuracy. http://www.nytimes.com/1997/03/29/movies/oval-office-tapes-it-wasn-t-just-nixon.html If there is a functioning recording system it would have to have been installed by, and operated by, someone who is more tech-savvy than SCROTUS, unless it's just a cassette recorder in a desk drawer.
Trump is enough of a narcissist - and apparently is also becoming at least as paranoid as Nixon - that the idea of recording every golden word he speaks to preserve it for posterity might appeal to him. But, as Tricky Dick learned, such things can end up biting one on the butt.

(12,448 posts)He was the FBI Director, for gods sake; he knows all about recordings of supposedly private conversations.
And now at least two senators (Democrats, of course) are demanding the recordings, if they exist. Dump just dug that hole of his even deeper. "Tapes" were what brought Nixon down.
