By Laurence H. Tribe May 13 at 3:01 PM
Laurence H. Tribe is Carl M. Loeb University Professor and Professor of Constitutional Law at Harvard Law School.
The time has come for Congress to launch an impeachment investigation of President Trump for obstruction of justice.
The remedy of impeachment was designed to create a last-resort mechanism for preserving our constitutional system. It operates by removing executive-branch officials who have so abused power through what the framers called high crimes and misdemeanors that they cannot be trusted to continue in office.
No American president has ever been removed for such abuses, although Andrew Johnson was impeached and came within a single vote of being convicted by the Senate and removed, and Richard Nixon resigned to avoid that fate.
Now the country is faced with a president whose conduct strongly suggests that he poses a danger to our system of government.

(27,792 posts)Lawrence Tribe is absolutely right!
Too bad there are no "checks & balances" anymore, since the GOP now controls all three branches of the U.S. Government.
Neither Eddie Munster nor McTurtle will ever agree to impeachment, so tRump is free to continue destroying our country...piece by piece, and there's nothing the Democrats in Congress can do about it, since they are in the minority in both houses of Congress.

(17,387 posts)Is it technically possible? Yes. However, why would Republicans impeach Trump when doing so would throw a wrench in their drive to cut benefits, environmental regulations, and taxes? It is a fantasy to think that a Republican controlled Congress would impeach Trump.

25th Amendment. Then, they can all CYA and blame it all on DT & Flynn.
Anyone is better than DT, but we have to go through herds of Repubs to get to an honest and rational one.

(12,864 posts)I think most Rethugs in congress would rather have Pence than the unpredictable orangutan. Whether or not they appoint a special prosecutor or go the impeachment route is entirely a matter of political considerations.

(2,647 posts)republicans will still ram their agenda down America's throat whether there is a lunatic in the W.H. or a religious zealot. It won't matter.
What needs to happen is that because of the collusion with Russia, the whole election should be thrown out and Clinton be installed as POTUS. I know, I know, that won't happen, but it is the only way to restore sanity to the Government of the United States.
just sayin'.

(6,017 posts)- Scream for most of a decade about how the President needs to be impeached, but based on completely ridiculous reasons. That way, when their man is in power, everyone is so inoculated against the call for impeachment that it's simply assumed by most Americans to be hyperbolic, irrational whining.
Except this time, it isn't. But it is going to be harder to get the masses riled up b/c of the false calls for "Impeachment" since Obama took office. Most who don't really pay attention now simply assume it's nothing more than partisan ranting and ignore it.
