U2 take aim at Trump in first concert of 'The Joshua Tree' tour in Vancouver

Last edited Mon May 15, 2017, 05:28 AM - Edit history (1)

U2 took on President Donald Trump during the opening night concert of The Joshua Tree 2017 tour at B.C. Place in Vancouver on Friday night.

“I’m so sick of it!” Bono shouted, during the first number, 'Sunday Bloody Sunday', from their 1983 album 'War.'

Later he urged the audience to “send a message from Canada to the U.S.A.,” and then led the crowd in a chorus of “power of the people; so much stronger than the people in power.”

The Globe and Mail reports that at one point during the show, clips are played from an episode of the 1950s black-and white TV western 'Trackdown' in which a con man named Trump comes to town to warn citizens to protect themselves from the end of the world by building a wall.

“You’re a liar, Trump,” the hero responds.

During the concert, Bono tells the crowd: “In a democracy, the government should fear the citizens, not the other way around.”

A transcript of some of the dialog from Snopes:

http://www.snopes.com/trackdown-trump-character-wall/

Narrator: The people were ready to believe. Like sheep they ran to the slaughterhouse. And waiting for them was the high priest of fraud.

Trump: I am the only one. Trust me. I can build a wall around your homes that nothing will penetrate.

Townperson: What do we do? How can we save ourselves?

Trump: You ask how do you build that wall. You ask, and I’m here to tell you.

How they found that video is incredible. I saw this tour twice, can't do it again. But that video at the beginning is absolutely perfect. 'I'm the only one that can do it'. 'Build a wall...around your houses'. Jesus H, it's perfection.

Right now, Bono is furious with Chump b/c of his plans to cut HIV funding, so we will be seeing more anti-Trump vids from them during this tour.

Btw you're lucky to have caught the original tour for Joshua Tree- My first concert was their War Tour in 83. And I was fortunate to see Zoo TV, PopMart, Elevation, and their last three tours here in the US. Their music has been the soundtrack to my life.

War was on my college campus, University of Houston, and I missed it. Also missed REM during their Fables tour. I was determined to see the Joshua Tree tour and so was Bono. He sang with a broken arm. Lost track of my friends on the second show and was drunk and stoned and crying and a nice couple took me back to campus.

Wish I saw the War tour. That was the one that turned me on to them. It was summer, so I was out of school and they played it on MTV, when MTV played music. The US Festival. Radio sucks here, so I never would have heard them.

Did they film the concerts you attended? U2 and Phil Joanou were looking to make the next Don't Look Back-type documentary- We all know how that turned out. lol

My cousin was attending UNC when I first saw them in 83- I can thank him for opening my mind up to U2, REM, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, The Cure, and the other bands of college radio.

I'm still on the fence about seeing this tour. The closest city they'll be playing is at Bonnaroo in Manchester, TN, and Louisville, KY, too. Not sure if I want to fork over a couple of hundred and travel to those places.

This was from Seattle last night- The stage design is freaking amazing!
